Electric Picnic is a three day camping festival at the end of summer taking place in Stradbally Hall Estate in the rolling fields of Country Laois. The site is easily reached from any of airports of Galway, Cork or Shannon and is a more expensive option for the veteran festival-goer.
The festival is smaller than Oxegen, with an emphasis on dance music though there is plenty else on offer: old innovators like Brian Wilson, Madness and the Flaming Lips top the bill with bright young things MGMT and Fleet Foxes following . In the dance tents, seminal electronica act Orbital has been confirmed. Tickets are the priciest of all the summer festivals. Family camping tickets are around £200 each with up to two children under-12 free. 13-17 year olds are not permitted on site, even when accompanied and there are no single day tickets.
The flowing countryside of south-east Ireland surrounds the small town of Stradbally and County Laois has a strong rural tradition and has fascinating historical sites to visit like the Rock of Dunamase, Castle Durrow. Combine the festival with walking in the Slieve Bloom Mountains (the oldest in Europe) and a visit to the beautiful Glenbarrow waterfalls.
