With fantastic weather and beautiful, rugged scenery, Portugal is a popular golf destination. Located on the western edge of the Iberian Peninsula, the country has many beautiful vistas and plenty of high-quality golf courses. Whether you’ll be in the northern, central or southern region of Portugal, there are courses waiting to be played.
If you’re traveling to northern Portugal, you’re destined for fabulous adventure through mountains and over rivers. The cities of Braga and Porto have some fantastic attractions and there are also some fabulous golf courses.
• Estela Golf Club
Thirty minutes from Porto you’ll find Estela Golf Club. This course features magnificent ocean views and two large lakes. Not to be approached lightly, the fairways at Estela are narrow and the course is extremely competitive.
• Miramar Gold Club
Between Espinho and Porto, Miramar is a well-known and well-liked course, just off the beach. Almost every tee includes a view of the coastline and there are several challenges at Miramar, including tees situated on sand dunes.
• Montegelo Golf
Located in the Portuguese mountains Montegelo’s craggy mountain views give the course a unique and interesting shape and feel, not to mention beautiful vistas. Divided into three parts of nine holes each, the course is a test for any golfer.
• Oporto Golf Club
The oldest course in Portugal, Oporto is full of venerable tradition and well-aged class. Just south of Porto, the course is short but challenging. It is also home to one of the oldest competitions in golf, the Skeffington Cup, which has been played annually at Oporto since 1891.
Lisbon, capital of the country, is in the southern portion of Central Portugal. The area also features Sintra, a picturesque town on the sea, Pombal and Torres Vedras. The heart of Portugal is robust, with many gorgeous views and several golf courses.
Part of the Penha Longa resort, Atlântico is a championship course with a hilly landscape and lush vegetation providing ample views for the course. Watch for the hardy wind whipping across the course from nearby mountains.
• Golden Eagle Golf Club
Known for its challenging holes, Golden Eagle is a situated about an hour from Lisbon. This golf course is a technically outstanding adventure, with no two holes alike. Golden Eagle boasts wide fairways, but also features many sand traps, bunkers and lakes.
• Oitavos Dunes
Consistently ranked one of the best courses in Portugal, Oitavos Dunes is located right on the western tip of the peninsula in the Sintra-Cascais National Park. The course features both unmatched views of the Atlantic and the magical backdrop of the Sintra Mountains.
• Praia D’el Rey
Just an hour north of Lisbon, and near the castle and lagoon in the medieval city Obidos, Praia D’el Rey is another top golf course. The course is both difficult and beautiful. Several of the holes have a terrific ocean view, but with that view comes the challenge of the wind.
Just south of Portugal, Troia is located between the Sado Estuary and the Serra de Arrábida—the perfect location for a golf course. Designed around the magnificent landscape, playing golf at Troia is a lesson in inspiration.
The Algarve region makes up the southern most point of Portugal. The ocean views and wildlife, as well as the many tourist attractions and beaches, make the Algarve a perfect destination for a golf vacation. The majority of the country’s golf courses are located in the Algarve, the mildest region of the country.
The second oldest golf course in the region, the Old is located in the golfing destination of Vilamoura. With year-round play available, and the simple but effective use of the natural landscape, this is a course not-to-be-missed.
• Monte Rei Golf Club
A Jack Nicklaus Signature course, Monte Rei has 18 strong holes and fantastic attention to quality and detail. The views are enchanting and the course is one of the best in the country.
• Quinta de Cema
Inside the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, this 36-hole course is a staggering course with a high degree of difficulty. Designed by Rocky Roquemore, Quinta de Cema is a beautiful, all natural course.
• San Lorenzo Golf Club
Frequently sited as the best golf course in the Algarve, San Lorenzo is located right next to the Atlantic Ocean. The terrain is fantastic, the views are sublime and the golf is great.
Located in Villamoura and designed by Arnold Palmer, the Victoria is a course full of hazards, but very fun to play. The course has hosted many international golf events, and was designed for tournament play.
