Winnipeg

Standing as the capital of the Canadian region known as Manitoba, Winnipeg is as important today as it was hundreds, and even thousands of years ago. Because of its position roughly in the center of the North American continent it has always existed as a major trade and transportation center. However, because of the drastic differences in temperatures from season to season, the city has never quite experienced a great influx in residency. Visitors fall in love with its small-town feel, yet flee as soon as the first flake of winter falls. But dont let the chill deter you from enjoy the bounties Winnipeg is willing to offer. From the amazing shopping district near the junction of the Assiniboine and Red Rivers, to its culture houses where symphonies and ballets come alive, Winnipeg is never short on attractions, yet stays subtilely content with itself without showing any pomposity. Book your flight and visit Winnipeg, the sweet-spot of the Canadian countryside.

When to go:

Winters are what turn travelers off of Winnipeg, so we suggest avoiding this season entirely. However, if youve got yourself a pair of snowshoes, and Gore-Tex is a close friend of yours, then dont let us deter you! If cycling through parks or strolling down a clean boulevard to the evenings theatre performance, youll enjoy doing so in the days of summer much more. Temperatures peak around 90F in July, so if a mild climate is your preference, visit in the shoulder months of summer. Dont drift too far into spring or autumn, as the chill may ruin those pleasant outings a bit!

Getting there and around:

Winnipeg International Airport, while not the busiest transit hub in the country, has some of the best connection, with flights arriving from nearly every continent around the world. Some may of course be stop-overs, especially those of European origin, but when you enter the terminal, its a breeze from there. The airport is stocked with everything a traveler needs or may want, and though we rarely advise renting a vehicle in a city, Winnipeg remains a city devoid of heavy traffic, so your own car may be entirely plausible and very convenient means of transportation. However, if you choose to rely on Winnipegs great public services, you can catch a bus or taxi to the city (YWG is only 10km [6mi] from the center of Winnipeg).

If youre an advocate of public transportation and dont want add to the mess of rush hour, you can get around the city quite handily via the bus system. Routes go nearly everywhere taxis do, and the only virtue you need to live by here is patience. In extreme-weather conditions (blizzards, etc), Winnipegs public transit services are free.

Attractions:

If Winnipeg is a staple for anything, it is for the festival. The city has so many events throughout the year, it'll never be void of something for visitors to take part in. Winnipegs main outdoor attractions are those of the Fringe Festival and Boozefest. Youngsters may not be reveling in the latter, but as they say, theres something for everyone.

The citys trademark museum, the Manitoba Museum, is a place youll need an entire day to sift through. More of an institution than a holding-ground for exhibits, youll find Planetarium shows a Science Gallery here as well. The Museum is indeed part of the Winnipegs Centennial Centre, where a beautiful Concert Hall also exists one of most acoustically precise constructions in the world. One of the biggest draws of the Manitoba Museum is the replica of the Nonsuch, the 17^th -century sailing ship that started the Canadian fur trade in the west.
