Verona

A historic city that throws its past out at you in all its splendor and glory, Verona is a world unto itself, and though it is part of the Venetian region, it stands alone in solitary wonder, unquestionably one of the most beautiful cities in the world. You will not find skyscrapers here, nor many high-rise hotels or office buildings. The city has a modern sector and an ancient sector, separated for the most part by the Adige River, but even those traveling through Veronas commercial districts will sense the citys past creeping in, especially once you sit down at a table in one of the street-side restaurants. The architectural magnificence is extraordinary, but the stories behind the structures bring even more meaning than their presence, and this can only add to your enjoyment of the city where Romeo and Juliet were conjured up inside Shakespeares mind. Bring a significant other; bring your whole family. Visit Verona today!

When to go:

Because Verona is quite close in proximity to its more popular sibling, Venice, it shares much the same in climatic conditions. Therefore, it is quite simple. Summer brings quite a bit of heat to the city, and if youre in the mood for elbow rubbing and long lines, then this is the time of year for you. Otherwise, try to making your way to Verona either in spring or autumn; spring seems lovely blooming flowers, while autumn turns the whole city into a colorful haven of history. If you wish to see the city when almost all of the inhabitants are those in hotels and hostels (tourists, backpackers, globe-trekkers), then your best bet is to come in late-summer to early-autumn. Most of the citys residents are vacationing themselves, and the city becomes one huge booming tourism business.

Getting there and around:

Catullo International Airport, the regions connection to the country and the world, is located in a city adjacent to Verona, Villafranca. Only 10km away from the city center, its a breeze of a trip getting to your hotel from the terminal. Shuttle buses are available, as are taxis; unless you need a boot for your luggage, youre better off saving some cash and hopping onto a bus. The buses go directly to the main railway station of Verona, from which point you can take any number of transit services to your destination at a much cheaper rate.

Most commuters and visitors take buses to get around the city - if they choose not to walk, that is. You cannot obtain tickets directly from the drivers, so youll have to visit a tobacco shop (storefronts hold large T on faade). For transit novices we recommend that you spring for the tourist ticket, giving you unlimited rides for the day. If youd like to take a taxi instead, dont wave at passing drivers, as you will only waste your energy. Taxi ranks are in the city center and at the railway station. Call ahead for pick-ups at your hotel.

Attractions:

Veronas historic center is where you will find many of its chief attractions. Near the Square of the Bishopric you will find the beautiful, Romanesque Duomo, built in the 12^th century. Since then, it has receive a number of renovations and alterations, but its original image is still much present. In addition to its historic value, it holds a great artistic significance. Within close distance of each other and the Duomo are the churches of St Elena and St John.

To contrast the historic center is the modern center, where you will find the beautiful, if imposing Castelvecchio. Once the residence of Cangrande II, it is now the home of the Civic Museum of Art.

At the banks of the Adige River you can see many attractions, including that of the House of Juliet and the House of Romeo, both nearby one another. The House of Juliet holds the famed balcony with a bronze statue of Juliet overlooking the courtyard. Also near the shore of the Adige River is the Roman Theatre, with the Archaeological Museum in its company.
