Tulsa

Oklahoma may be the epitome of western US thinking and methodology, but it is not without any unique twists. Amid fenced fields of wheat and forest, it'd be peculiar to erect a jumble of steel, concrete, pavement, and more steel, but flighty entrepreneurs turned off by the mayhem of Wall Street in its early days concocted the capital of the Midwest, Oklahoma City, hoping to make their vision a reality. Soon thereafter, an influx of settlers hoping to make a buck off of the founders' ideas sparked a boom town, and later a second metropolis - though a bit more tranquil - sprouted northeast of the capital; they named Oklahoma City's sibling Tulsa. Today you have to look quite closely to find remnants proving the old stories of expansion true, but despite the fact that cafes do hold dominion over the city's streets and apartment rentals go for just a tad less than the most well-known boulevards on the east and west coasts, Tulsa hasn't lost its easygoing charm, and much of the food made in its restaurants is Americana with no shortage of prairie. With what seems to be an endless supply of museums, Tulsa has enough to satisfy even the most ardent of art critics and historians. Some establishments are not without bias, but for the most part, most displays around town draw little or no smirks. Take Tulsa with a critical eye, or simple come for the sites, the jovial atmosphere, and even the horseshoe and cowboy hat souvenirs. Rate this modern metropolis for yourself. When to go:

Whether one gets to Tulsa by way of Route 66 in a '67 Shelby or aboard a Boeing sky bus from Europe, coming across erratic climate conditions intertwined with the staple atmospheric changes should come of no surprise. Draughts are seen as fairly routine occurrences, but with the frequency of tropical storms hitting the south, Oklahoma has been more damp than usual. Nonetheless, the sun is visible most of the year, and despite the lack of white beaches and ocean water in the central US, you're advised to carry plenty of Coppertone.

Getting there and around:

The nomenclature of Tulsa's airport was derived from the fact that, for quite a while, flights were not only kept at a domestic level, but connections between Mexico and Canada were being made as well. After the terminal received a number of major enhancements, attention on Tulsa has grown every year. When traveling from the UK, you're likely to stop over in a city on the east coast of the US. From there, only a few hours will be needed to get you to your final destination. A few years ago, buses would be said to rule the roads in Tulsa. Recently, however, the city's private taxi companies have been offering very reasonable fares to compete with state-owned services, and the result is a very comprehensive - albeit sometimes confusing - array of transportation options.

Attractions:

To give you a sense of the diversity Tulsa holds in the area of cultural sites, we feel it would only be appropriate to synopsize a few: The Philbrook Museum of Art is were the crme de la crme of the city's canvases, sculpture, and other contemporary pieces reside; the Gilcrease Museum specializes in Western art, as well as items preserved from American Indian findings; a geologists dream house, the Elsing Museum is were all stones go to shine; and some marvelous fun for kids can be had in the Ida Dennis Willis Museum of Miniatures, Dolls, and Toys. If a trade-off of the noise of Tulsa's streets for the sounds of tigers and sheep is pleasing to your ears, a visit to the Tulsa Zoo is certainly an activity you'll want to entertain.
