Thiruvananthapuram

The capital of the Kerala state in India, Thiruvananthapuram is a splendid concoction of tropical breezes, warm, sunny days and beautiful sights laid out on a series of seven hills, reminiscent of the make-up of Rome. The city touches the Arabian Sea, leaving it to be nothing short of paradise. A benefit to travelers from all over the world, the city is also one of few in India that boasts an incredibly diverse ethnic and religious population. You will find worship buildings for those practicing Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Judaism, and Islam, and maybe a few more if you look closely enough. What attracts people the most to Thiruvananthapuram, however, is the simplistic wonder of it all. The city, for the most part, is peacefully serene, one where it would be very difficult to find a sore spot among its beautiful landscape of streets and boulevards dotted with trees and flowerpots. Visit Thiruvananthapuram, and youll be in for a world of surprises that will both amaze you and stay with you.

When to go:

Throughout the year, Thiruvananthapuram gets hit with nothing but tropical weather, so along with the perfect days come the moments of monsoon-like rains and occasional gale-force winds. If you wish to avoid the possibility of terrible weather ruining your pleasant vacation, you can visit Thiruvananthapuram anytime between December and April. Temperatures drop a bit, especially in winter, but nothing to create the need for heavy apparel. In addition, if you choose to avoid the city during high-season, youll also be avoiding the crowds and the price hikes. Its a win-win!

Getting there and around:

Not far from the city, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport sports all of the facilities that most-any international flight center provides to customers. Along with 24 hour, round-the-clock service, youll be provided with amenities ranging from VIP lounges to affordable restaurant courses and wonderful teas and lattes at the cafes on-site. To get into the city, we recommend opting for the more expensive but roomier taxicab. If you choose to forgo a ride in a taxi, you can save your rupees and hop on board a bus headed to all the major hotels (or city center).

While buses may seem like the best way of getting around while saving some money, youre better off walking most of the time, and if you happen to need transportation, to hail a cab. They may be pricier than buses, but theyll get you to your destination much more quickly.

Attractions:

The city of Thiruvananthapuram boasts one of the premier beach resort locales in the entire eastern hemisphere, Kovalam Beach. This beautiful stretch of sand and hotels has been the choice for vacationers for decades, and you will never grow tired of the multitude of activities available, and with a wide range of room pricing, anyone can afford to enjoy beachfront access.

A cluster of buildings beloved by the city of Thiruvananthapuram that continues to receive high marks from visitors are the three establishments that make up the Museum Complex. These buildings: The Napier Museum, Chitra Art Gallery, and the Zoological Park, all carry distinct collections; of course, the last of which has a particularly /living/ collection.

The Napier Museum houses a great array of historic artifacts and bronze and ivory pieces. The buildings itself is quite marvelous in that it is constructed in a way to allow a sort of natural air flow, a pleasant perk for those especially warm days.

The Art Gallery is hope to a great number of nationally-renowned artists works. Most items on display have been done by those who attend or have attended an art school in India. A few international pieces are showcased here as well, including a few from China, Japan, Tibet, and Bali.

The Zoological Park is indeed one of the first zoos to be created inside India, and here, among the beautiful man-made wilderness, thrive many exotic species (in particular, snakes).
