Tangier

All the cities of Morocco are intertwined in one way or another. If you're looking for nights on the town that appear to be endless successions of parties where everyone inside a few miles' radius seems to be in on the action, well...you can visit a number of places around the country. Casablanca and Marrakech both have their crowds, and Tangier, our featured destination in this guide, is no different. Touching both the waters of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, Tangier is a city on the top of a northern outcrop of Morocco often viewed as a peninsula. Sprawled out along the coast, Tangier is only a few miles from southwestern Spain, and though its Muslim base far outnumbers other cultural influences, there's always a bit of room in the markets for a few international voices and the tastes they carry along with them. The colors of fabrics seen on pedestrians are undoubtedly African, and the textile industry in the city, like many places around the continent, is flourishing. Similar to Marrakech in congestion and intensity, Tangier also shares the aspect of poverty, and though the economy has been on the upside for quite some time, the decrepit shacks and their dirt- and dust-strewn districts are still highly visible. Nevertheless, nearly all sights, sounds, and scents in Tangier are pleasing to first timers and veterans alike. Waste not another day! Book your flight to Tangier today!

When to go:

Any attempts to pinpoint a single great time to visit Morocco will leave you with too many choices. Every season of the year brings sunshine and warmth to the northern tip of Africa, and only in the depths of winter will you receive any hint of cold. Rain seems to come and go as it pleases. We won't bother or try to steer you away from the droplets; our resources are somewhat lacking in such sophistication. As long as you keep your poncho at hand, there little chance of a trip gone bad. Moroccans welcome the sun, but only to a degree (pardon the pun). It's rather uncomforting to have to endure an outdoor adventure through the city's center in the middle of summer; it not only shines, it sears! It's best to leave the extensive journeys for the mornings and evenings, and occupy your afternoons with museum exhibits.

Getting there and around:

Fellow African nations and European and Middle-Eastern cities are the most well connected to all of Morocco's airports. Tangier sports it's own international gateway, and those in the UK will come across little - if no - trouble finding their way here. A fairly modern center, the terminal holds an admirable range of services, and airport staff is only too eager to help when the need arises. Buses are the way to get about, no ifs ands or buts about it. Taxis are available but are ridiculously expensive, and the same goes for rental vehicles. You'll want to walk most of your way around town anyhow, but if distances are too great, public transit is the most reasonable alternative.

Attractions:

The Petit Socco, a melding pot for all peoples in Tangier, is a big draw for travelers. Long held to low esteem by elders and even the general society, things have turned around, and you will no longer find seedy activities brewing here - only publicly supported entertainment and attractions can be found here today. The Kasbah is the biggest highlight of Petit Socco.
