Tallin

Not many individuals are aware Estonia shares in a continent known as Europe. As a matter of fact, some are baffled by the fact that such a place exists. A piece of land with such a name might seem to be whisked out of a novella or fantasy read, but Estonia, though undoubtedly unique, is ever so real. Once portion of Russia, Estonia battled through instability for quite a while after its independence was successfully achieved. It seems today Estonia has things under control, and though some may be turned off by a few traditions that may be taken as national oddities to say the least, it's difficult not to like this unique flavor nestled between the Gulf of Riga and the Gulf of Finland. Touching the Baltic Sea, a body of water known for its calmness and warmth - a strange characteristic for an area relatively high up in the northern hemisphere. Now, it wouldn't be appropriate if we left out what is probably the best property of this ex-Soviet recipe, Tallinn, Estonia's capital, so let's 'dive in', shall we? Tallinn, put concisely as possible, is a medieval dreamland where modernism is semi-welcome and where the ancient stands out no matter how much steel and glass sprouts along the coast. The capital is packed with sites ranging from standalone marvels to museums holding what appear to be countless artifacts. Because it is a major hub of Estonia, you'll find everything from everywhere, and if a trip off-course shows itself on your itinerary, there's no better place from which to plan your journey.

When to go:

Summer is the season of choice for travelers to Estonia, whether they're from neighboring nations or visiting from another earthly plate. Daily temperatures in the summertime reach a perfectly comfortable 85F on average, but as it goes in this part of the world, as soon as the days delve outside those three months, the heat quickly dissipates. Even in spring and autumn you'll have to endure chilly mornings and evenings, but as midday arrives, the sun usually follows.

Getting there and around:

Though many travelers, whether they be frequent fliers or occasional globetrotters, are unaware of Tallinn as a destination, city, or the capital of the nation of Estonia, flights are indeed available to the Baltic metropolis. Though most connections are made between northern European cities only, you will find some routes to/from Denmark, Germany, and others. You'll have no problems obtaining a ticket to Tallinn from London, but you may be limited by flight times. Choose wisely. Buses are good for travel inside Tallinn and only inside this city. As residents and travelers to the country can attest, cars are reasonable means of getting around Estonia at large, but if you happen to find Tallinn appealing enough to keep within it's limits, public transit will serve you well.

Attractions:

Tallinn holds two cathedrals which, though world's apart in architecture and age, appeal to nearly all who lay eyes upon them. The Russian Orthodox creation, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, is a 19th century item found in the old town. Nearby is Toomkirik, a Lutheran landmark, and if you're looking for old, this is the place to start. Constructed in the 13th century, Toomkirik is smaller than many of its neighbors, but that doesn't seem to deter visitors from gawking at its resilience. If you enjoy architecture for the sake of its existence, the tower known as Kiek-in-de-Kok may strike your fancy. The Estonian Art Museum a great place to view treats indoors.
