StockholmLaid out over the expanses of several islands, Stockholm is undoubtedly one of the most visually-splendid cities in the world. It is the capital of the northern-hemispheric nation of Sweden, where you will always be minutes away from a wonderful art gallery, a national landmark, and of course, a thriving commercial district. Trade in the area has been booming ever since Stockholms existence, and because of this, international influences aplenty can be found throughout the city, more-heavily concentrated around the citys busy ports. A major factor in Stockholms popularity is its cleanliness. Though gridlock is commonplace in any European city, pollution here is among the lowest on the continent, partly because of the nations intense focus on technological innovation to serve the planets well-being. Best of all, these characteristics are what give this city high marks from us at /Flight Comparison/. So treat yourself to one of the best city experiences you may ever come across, book your flight today!
When to go:
Visitors to Stockholm will love the countrys temperate weather. Theres no guarantee that you wont get a little spritz or soaking while roaming the city streets, but overall, because of the citys location, Stockholm sees some of the mildest conditions anywhere in the world. Beating sun will not be found here, and neither will an extensive thunder or snow storm. These factors are ideal for those evening strolls along the waterfront (whichever waterfront you happen to choose on a particular night, of course), and daylight averages roughly 9 hours in summer, offering you plenty of time to see the sights.
Getting there and around:
The biggest downside to travelers visits to Stockholm is the airports distance from the city center. At 45km (28mi), you know youre not in for a short ride. Luckily, there are plenty of transport options for you to choose from, and getting to the airport (Arlanda Airport) is not a problem, with connections to just about every major city in every country in the world. The fastest way to get into the Stockholm is to use the Arlanda Express train service. Turn-around times are quite frequent (10-15 minutes), and more often than not, youll get into Stockholm about twice as fast as you would by bus, taxi, or rented vehicle.
Getting around Stockholm, however basic the roadway system may be, can be a bit tricky. This is mostly due to the fact that the city consists of multiple islands, and therefore a great number of bridges to familiarize yourself with. Most city travelers, whether theyre Stockholm-ites or foreigners, find taxis to be the most useful way of getting around, albeit not the cheapest. If youd like to feel the Baltic breezes a bit more during your travels, rent or bring your own bicycle.
Attractions:
Stockholms Haga Park continues to be one of the most attractive destinations for visitors and locals alike. You can find nearly everything and anything you wish for among the park grounds, from nature walks, to museum exhibits. Even, a beautiful walk-through aviary and butterfly garden exist here in Haga Park. As an interesting factoid: many of the parks sites are among the oldest in the city.
Stockholm, however modern its image, always reserves a place for the old-fashioned at heart, and you can experience it all in Skansen, the worlds first open-air museum. Begun more than 100 years ago, the museum sits on a hilltop, from which place you can view much of the city while immersed in something of a cultural bonanza. Costumed actors play out their normal daily routines, and if youre feeling a little nautical, theres a wonderful aquarium to see here as well.
Unquestionably the most popular site in the city, and possibly the most visited in all of Sweden, is the Kungliga Slottet. Though is not the oldest castle in Europe, it is surely the largest, and it may surprise you that it is still serves its original purpose as the residence of the royal family. The castle holds a total of 608 rooms, and among its attractions, you can witness the Changing of the Guard everyday a bit past noon (12pm) in the summertime, and three days a week during the off-season.
