Split

Croatia, a small portion of Europe touching the Adriatic Sea, was for centuries a land where Roman rulers and their lineage retired from the public eye. Few chose Croatia's mountainous regions as the sites of their home away from home - palaces to be more precise, but most went the way of coast, and today Split, though not a sole center for the historic, is one of the best cities in Europe to envelope oneself in the past, with just enough to get by without public showers. In terms of tourist-friendly sites, you're more or less on your own in Split; become familiar with the country's language and you'll have an easy time getting about and in the know with concern to localized events. If you're no master of Croatian diction, you can visit nearly any tobacco or thrift shop for a map of the city. Because of its compactness, Split has a fairly simple layout, and after a few days - or even a few hours - of roaming around, getting around will be of no trouble. Museums offer in-depth exhibits from the city's birth to the 20th century, and art galleries offer phenomenal experiences even with their lack of world-renowned pieces. If you're still waiting to be astounded, a visit to the highest point of town will surely put a smile on your face. Spend some time by the coast, or walk a few garden trails. If Croatia is sparking your interest, Split will be your indulgence.

When to go:

Summer is Split's busiest season of the year, though the city is so ever far from experiencing congestion on a scale that London might any day of the year. Cruise ships dock here occasionally, though most visitors tend to be from neighboring towns and cities where most of the water they see is running in streams and rivers. Climatically speaking, Split provides a superb balance: winter as ski season; spring as picking season; summer as swimming season; and autumn as...well...the colorful season. Never too humid and never too warm, Split may occasionally be on the cool side in the mornings of spring, summer, and autumn, but the most common setting on Mother Nature's thermostat is balmy.

Getting there and around:

You must have extraordinary luck to find an international flight into or out of Split. Most of the flights which find their way to the city tend to be those from domestic locations, particularly that of the capital. It may seem a bit unappealing to have to stop over at Zagreb (capital) before arriving in Split, but because the nation itself is quite small, flights regularly take an hour or less. Split's airport is rather close to the city - always a high point to end of a journey. Unless you're a suburbanite in this country, walking is your preferred method of getting around. Life is altogether a bit simpler and less rushed in Croatia than in other European nations, and Split tends to be among the most relaxed of them. If you happen to be running late for particular event scheduled, you can call for a taxi and one will be provided surprisingly quickly.

Attractions:

Though there are so many great sites for one to visit in Split, it's difficult to highlight a few of the most notable; all have their own benefits and advantages. The city's museums are not housed in 12th century edifices but the items inside their walls certainly more than make up for the deceptively new exteriors. The remnants of Split's palace walls are availed to all who wish to see them, and though in its earliest years the founders of Split disallowed Christian settlements, the city eventually became home to a few beautiful chapels, some of which still stand today.
