Santa BarbaraNearly equidistant from San Luis Obispo and Los Angeles, the coastal Californian known as Santa Barbara sits amidst a beautiful scene of crashing waves, uneven terrain, a gorgeous mixture of sand and forest, and countless palms for one to huddle beneath when the summer sun happens to be over-burdensome. There is also certainly something to be said about small mountain ranges in North America. The stunning complimentary backdrop in the form of the Santa Ynez peaks bodes well for the city. Santa Barbara's outer edge is nearly entirely lined with inviting, whitewashed homes, topped with the red-tiled roofs that simply scream perfection from every angle, without overdoing it in the way of excess, lacking the panache that would easily deem these structures off-putting. Walking along the fine line between the city's urban complexes and those places less accessible via public transit, one gets the sense that the city was founded with comfort in mind. No matter where you go, quiet and calm await. If Santa Barbara weren't equally influenced by English-speaking folk as those from Espana, things would look quite dreary here. Fortunately, the Spanish brought many different traditions and artistic talents along with them from Mexico, providing the city with a warm, festive tone that just about all residents here have come to enjoy. Historic icons may be few in Santa Barbara, but the European heritage of old clearly lives on, shown in the continuously booming business district that has come to emblemize the city as a center for eclectic commerce. Also, many festivities occur here throughout the year, showcasing the hodgepodge of ethnicities that have grown to call Santa Barbara their home.
When to go:
Though not as steamy in summer and hardly so temperate in December as those locations more southerly inside the state of California, Santa Barbara holds quite an impressive milieu, populated by mostly clear skies, easy winds, and the occasional morning frost in January and February. Many will attest to summer being the ideal time to visit any region along the US' western coast, but such is a consensus worth looking at more closely. If the states of California, Washington and Oregon are experiencing warmer than normal temperatures, you may wish to opt for another time to visit. Spring and autumn are admirable candidates for the second slot; in fact, many living within So Cal will whisper the words of a better time in the shoulder seasons than that offered at the height of the year.
Getting there and around:
Seemingly lowlier than a regional terminal, Santa Barbara Municipal Airport is a short ride from downtown. And, in keeping with the close proximity theme, the airstrip provides far too few connections to be considered a worthy destination or starting point in the world of international travel. Our suggestion: Keep your sights on an international airport within a generally close vicinity of Santa Barbara. Large flight centers typically hold taxis serving the hometown and beyond. Buses and bicycles are popular in Santa Barbara, particularly along the waterfront, but if you're looking to hike the Santa Ynez, or go hunting for vineyards, a rental car will do the job far better than public and/or eco-friendly transportation.
Attractions:
There are few distinctly melded locations around the US that incorporate services with the foundation of multiple cultures or ethnicities. The Santa Barbara Mission is one such specialty. Begun in 1786 by a man named Junipero Serra, a member of California's Catholic clergy, the mission brought together both Indian and Hispanic aspects. All deemed part of the group contributed to the creation of twin bell towers overlooking the city.
