Sanaa

The oldest, wealthiest, and arguably the most important of Yemenese cities, Sana'a, the capital of Saudi Arabia's most popular southerly neighbor, is a feast for all senses. Home to the world's first skyscraper, built more than 2,000 years ago, Sana'a is a place where the richness of the past remains as alive and vibrant as those only budding in our world. If you're an admirer of old Islamic landmarks, bustling markets, awe-inspiring views, and fantastic hikes, Yemen's capital will please, even induce some emotions tinged with euphoria. Nearly everything bespeaks tradition in Sana'a. Whether it is the simple attire worn daily by both the men and women of the city, or the fashion by which foods are prepared, a trip here will bring you to one of the best and one of the most authentic Middle Eastern experiences provided throughout the region. Sit for some time at a caf or luncheonette of sorts and watch the typical Yemenite's way of life. Many come to be intrigued by the connections one can make with the societal conventions of this land and their own. In addition to boasting the oldest tower to stand upon the earth - save for the pyramids, of course - Sana'a is also fortunate to have kept the country's oldest mosque erect, as well as numerous portions of the ancient city wall. A walk around the city will bring one to understand the theme of keeping what is meaningful, which makes excursions around each part of town that much more significant; activities which would otherwise likely feel somewhat stale and, heavens, ordinary!

When to go:

Though the Red Sea tends to offer those in the near vicinity escape from the beating sun, Sana'a, cities further inland, and those west of the sliver of water are hardly left without a good amount of sunlight. The Yemenese capital's position amidst mountains allows some air currents to gently condition the city to a more comfortable state, though summers tend to be gust-less, making other seasons - all too obviously as well - better bets for successful vacations, business trips, or other journeys. Winters, though much more bearable than the July-September period, are on the opposite end of the spectrum, where chills exist. Simply put, a balanced climate is best.

Getting there and around:

Home to one of the busiest international airports in the region (both in the Middle East and Northeastern Africa), Sana'a brings an aire of importance to the travel table. One thing's for certain: you'll never be without a wealthy of connections to other major metropolises in the region, as well as numerous locations in Europe. You may find a direct flight to Sana'a from London or elsewhere in the UK, but such lengthy connections are more often made by private charter organizations rather than commercial fleets. Taxis are the most popular transportation vehicles in the capital apart from pedestrianism. Indeed, walking from site to site isn't very difficult, particularly in the Old Town, but if you need to make a cross-town jaunt, a petrol-propelled contraption is most likely necessary. Fares are relatively cheap.

Attractions:

The Bab al-Yemen, undeniably the most boisterous social and commercial circle in the city, is where most of the region's produce is sold, as well as handmade wares. Anyone interested in visiting Sana'a must trek to this location, after which a stop in an eclectic tea shop, a walk alongside the oldest barrier to encapsulate the city, and an hour's browse of the National Museum are all but mandatory afternoon activities that mustn't be missed.
