San Salvador

Located only miles from the beautiful Lago de Ilopango, the capital of the Central American nugget, El Salvador, sits sprawled over miles of relatively flat terrain, well-connected to all regions of the country. Its day-to-day life comes as no surprise to most who enter its network of ever-crowded streets and alleyways. Chock full of traffic, as well as the byproducts of massive gridlock: noise and air pollution, San Salvador is as easy to get lost in as it is to love and hate. A center for the collection of many of the world's Mayan finds, San Salvador attracts hundreds, even thousands of the world's most avid history buffs, and though quite a few of its own neighborhoods have lost their aged luster to volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and even floods, forcing them to renew or replace landmarks altogether, the city proves to be a fitting home for some of the most fascinating and prized discoveries to come out of the western world. All is not found inside galleries and other such cultural houses here, however. If you'd like to get an authentic meal with no international ties, make a trip to the Zona Rosa district, where, in addition to some of the best, most exotic dishes to come out of the continent, you'll come to know the city's thriving music and dance scene, where the sounds of bass and maracas intertwine to form both unique and infectious rhythms. If you're intent on getting some peace and quiet after your rendezvous with the most learned and loose institutions in San Salvador, you can always make your way to the outskirts of town, where you'll find Balboa Park, a series of very walkable trails which gain you picturesque views along the way.

When to go:

Nearly as south as Central American capitals come, San Salvador is the place to bake in the summer and the place to rest and rejuvenate whilst the more northerly portions of the world bask in gray skies, frozen flakes and numbed noses. If you ask us, the best times to visit El Salvador's capital are the shoulder seasons, when tourist volumes are at the lowest points of the year, and locals have yet to grow agitated with the unrelenting sunlight to come in the months of June, July, August, and September. Also, stay away from October if possible. The region's atmosphere likes to allow the governor of our solar system to linger about a bit after its stint as an overhead beacon of heat in prior weeks.

Getting there and around:

The largest international airport of El Salvador resides within the metropolitan area around the capital, but luckily, it is not the only such terminal in the country. Sharing the nation's traffic controls with other fight centers, San Salvador's runways are active day and night, making travel as convenient as possible for both arrivals and departures. Also, because it isn't far from the city's hotels, a quick taxi or bus ride will prove sufficient in getting yourself and your belongings to/from the capital. The city's government tends to differentiate between it's own bus service and the taxis in operation all over San Salvador, but they really come together as one. Often found to complement one another rather than complicate each other's schedules, both large and small vehicles work to ensure San Salvador and its visitors the best possible transit experience.

Attractions:

Enjoy a bit of a fun and play while on vacation in a foreign country? Just outside San Salvador sound the wheels of roller coasters of San Jacinto. Both kids and adults can have fun on the themed adventures, and all are accessible via a direct cable-car link from the capital, by which one can also reach a mountainside railroad, granting sightseers the best panoramas in the area.
