San Pedro Sula

A few dozen miles from the Honduras/Guatemala border, San Pedro Sula is a commercial and industrial center on the road to fame. Holding a permanent residential population of roughly 325,000, with a much larger number of daily commuters coming in and out of its network of roadways, allowing the city to easily establish itself as the fastest growing and most economically popular location in the Central American nation. Previously dubbed a transportation hub - for it was mostly utilized as an entry point by those arriving in the western part of the country from Guatemala, Belize, and elsewhere. Now, its mode of life has changed. From a router of traffic to an attraction for international business, San Pedro Sula has got its eyes set on an uphill future, and the crest doesn't seem too far off. Most everything in San Pedro Sula is modern. The hotels, the workplaces, even its restaurants and shopping districts have come to embrace brushed steel and dark stone for their themes. The city's almost seems to want to be known the world over as the next New York, though with a bit more color and far fewer taxis. Tourists do often find the city somewhat off-putting, particularly because of affinity for garnering currencies and not much else. Fortunately, those coming from international locations expecting some sites worth close inspection won't be disappointed. San Pedro's Central Plaza is a massive gathering place for locals and non-residents alike. With dozens (seemingly hundreds) of stalls selling all types of merchandise, as well as plenty of cultural attractions (i.e. street theatre, museums), there's always something to keep the visitor or pedestrian occupied. It is worth nothing that close to the city's Central Plaza stands the Museum of History and Anthropology, a well-arranged collection of pieces dating as far back as pre-Colombia. A pleasant outdoor caf is annexed from the museum, making for a convenient rest stop after an afternoon of digging through the remnants of past civilizations.

When to go:

Central America, one of the most richly tropical sectors of the world, is home to numerous climates, some of which shift sporadically, and thus, eliminating many chances for successful weather forecasts. The rule of thumb many in Honduras and neighboring countries abide by is to pass judgment on the future via the senses. Perhaps such a factoid sounds a bit spooky or simply a note suffused with the crazies, but as anyone who has traveled to a climatically temperate location will vouch for, such places are wholly left for Mother Nature to do as she pleases. As far as generalities go, summers are the hottest of all seasons in the area cordoned off by the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator, the shoulder seasons (spring, autumn) are guaranteed to be less toasty, and winters are surprisingly luscious.

Getting there and around:

San Pedro Sula has done well in keeping its image as a connected city backed up by a solid transit sector, both in the aerospace field as well as ground travel. Chances are you won't visit the national capital before making your way to San Pedro if you're flying internationally. The city's own international airport provides a sufficient number of connections for most travelers needs. The buses San Pedro has to offer commuters and tourists are never empty, but the city does well in keeping enough options open for the rise in daily passengers utilizing the system seen every year.

Attractions:

If the Guamilito Handicraft Market and San Pedro Sula's museums have done all they can to satisfy your cravings for all things Honduran, you can always plan an excursion to destination far from the city's limits. Lake Yojoa and the Pulhapanzak Waterfalls are both fascinating sights that will make for a wonderful daylong trip.
