San JoseSan Jose
Are you one to enjoy a fantastic five-course, five-star meal along with views of commercial megaliths that scream tech? How about the glamour of an LA-like downtown without the fake palm trees and intense crowdedness and pollution? Ok, so there are a few faux trunks and faux leaves, but San Jose, the semi-annoying neighbor to the gorgeous and refined bright-orange city of San Francisco, has more to do with its state, country and the world than providing room for fast server databases. Intertwined with the glass-sheathed steel structures are historic sites too enticing to walk idly by, a social scene that has occasionally stolen the crowds from its sibling a few miles away, and of course, when in San Jose it'd be foolish not to take a drive around the 'Valley' - Silicon Valley for newbies to the internet world. If you feel awkward driving around the land of mansions in your Avis Ford rental, you can always blow your chance at a vacation the following year on a day's rental of a luxury sports car. Can you say Modena? Now from the looks of things San Jose seems to have all the makings of a high-falutin' destination, but it's rather surprising what one can do within the confines of the city on a low budget. Book your flight to San Jose and see why the attention it receives every year continues to grow.
When to go:
Throughout the majority the year, San Jose is draped in sunlight. Rainfall does occur, of course, but with an average of 300 clear days in all of its four seasons, you'll have plenty of dry stretches to choose for your vacation time. Temperatures in the city rarely exceed 86F, and humidity is of little or no concern for summer, spring or autumn. Winter, on the other hand, instead of bombardment from snowfall and other climatic occurrences brought on by cold fronts, receives a drastic influx of dampness that, all but declaring San Jose off limits to everyone other than natives of the east or those from tropical locations around the world (which, interestingly enough, encompasses quite a few travelers, so feel free to visit!).
Getting there and around:
San Jose International Airport, a relatively little-known hub of air travel, offers a vast network of connections that includes everything from those of domestic natures to European and Asian reaches. Of course, most flights from the UK and the rest of the Europe tend to stop over at an eastern-US terminal before making way for San Jose, but irritations in the world of delays, etc., are few. Since silicon has become something of the designated element of society in San Jose, it just made sense to alter the title of the public transit authority to the Valley Transportation Authority (in fact, it is short for Santa Clara Valley). The organization apparently runs a fairly tight service; buses now rival taxis in efficiency.
Attractions:
Easily found among the maze of concrete complexes, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph is a Renaissance masterpiece. Construction for the Cathedral began at the start of the 19th century and was completed about 80 years later, and today the original work and stained-glass windows still complement one another beautifully and attract hoards of tourists fresh off their 'Valley' excursions. For the youngsters of the traveling world there is the , where imaginations fly and more hands-on exhibits reside than one can manage to experiment with in a single visit. The giant bubbles are especially popular!
