San Jose Cabo

A neighbor to San Lucas and not far from the popular vacationer's destination, La Paz, San Jose del Cabo is a seaside Mexican treat saturated with color, old colonial style streets, and some impressive structures to boot. Dominated by a cathedral and its square, the city-town is one of few in the area lacking the infestation of tourists that has plagued many a locale in the region. Just doesn't of miles below the latitudinal degree known the world over as the Tropic of Cancer, San Jose is very much the traveler's dream town. Home to enough but not too much, its grid is littered with commotion- and caffeine-driven coffee houses, the quiet solace of its few art galleries, addictive boutiques, and cozy suite-less bed-and-breakfast establishments. People come here for the nuances and the calm atmosphere, and the good beaches aren't all that bad either. As one of the southernmost cities within the Mexican province of Baja California Sur, San Jose del Cabo is often one of the first stops on the eastern end of the country for seafaring folk. Its harbor is one of the busiest "districts" in the city, and with a large amount of importing and exporting going on each day along the waterfront, there's reason to suspect that its importance in the world of international commerce in Mexico is great, despite the city's being shrouded in a sort of graceful, casual elegance often typical of more "choice" destinations.Well? Need we say more? Grab your walking shoes, book your flight, and make your way to the unseemly, but highly venerated (by its own people, of course) Baja-born city of San Jose del Cabo.

When to go:

A magnet for warmth throughout much of the year, San Jose - or much of Baja, both California and California Sur - offers credence to the phrase: 'around-the-clock paradise.' Don't let our loosely coined term fool you, however. San Jose is as much home to a pleasantly warm atmosphere as a baking hot sun. Residing close to the mouth of the bay in which hundreds of miles and quite a few Mexican provinces touch ocean, San Jose is more or less the recipient of everything that's wonderful - and a sizable portion of what's detrimental. The shoulder seasons of spring and autumn (neither of which are shifted in succession in relation to Europe, as the city - and, well, all of Mexico as well - shows itself north of the Equator) are both worth opting for over high season. That's summer, for those not in the know.

Getting there and around:

Serving a mixture of Mexican and American airlines, San Jose's terminal(s) (it all depends on how you view the aerospace industry), offers numerous flights around the country, as well as quite a few to Mexico's second-closest (we're talking history-wise) cousin, California. You may obtain a direct flight from many European locations to Mexico City, wherefrom access to San Jose is almost gained too easily. San Jose's bus system continues to expand, and you can indeed get by without much help from taxis, or even a vehicle rental, but sole reliance on public transit may mean long waits and a relatively early cut-off hour in the late evening.

Attractions:

Downtown San Jose del Cabo is the biggest draw for tourists, despite the allure of white sands just a few miles away. With a city center compact as it is, and markets, cultural centers, and picturesque sights just minutes from one another, San Jose's inner circle has enough in store to keep one occupied and content for days.
