Salvador

Positioned on the northern edge of the Bahia de Todos Santos, Salvador is a Brazilian city with rich heritage, fantastic cuisine - whether you're dining en un hut or inside a palace, and an infrastructure almost completely reliant on a single global commodity: sugar. There are many aspects of Salvador worth a close look and one's appreciation, but within such an immense and abundant source of so many cultural ethnicities and their traditions, color, and attractions both young and aged, there's bound to be a few missed points along the way. Let us help you whittle away the excess and get you to the biggest and best of this Brazilian metropolis. First seen by foreign eyes in the year 1501 by exploration aficionado Amerigo Vespucci, Salvador's landscape is something of a specialty amongst copycats. Sure, the whole of Brazil is as authentic as one gets to a real South American region, but credit is certainly due to its "founding fathers," a group of European ship men destined to travel the world over. Over the centuries, fair, extraordinary, as well as horrific practices took place to establish thriving colonies in the region. By the mid-1800s, slavery was generally the accepted medium by which the construction of towns and cities, the cultivation of farmland, and the creation of transit lines were completed. Today, things in Brazil are radically different. Boasting one of the most freely democratic governmental systems in the world, the country has taken over all as the designated driver for the continent and its close neighbors to the north going into the 21st century. Though things may be different in Salvador and the rest of Brazil today, memories have clearly been passed on, with numerous celebrations and other services put on around the city throughout the year.

When to go:

Hundreds of miles below the Equator, Salvador sits alongside a pool of tropical splendor. The South Atlantic has generally been good to the city, though now and then the equanimity might be found disturbed, resulting in strong and quickly shifting weather patterns - even hurricanes aren't out of the question on the Brazilian coast. Oftentimes, travelers will speak of the magnificence of Brazil's spring, when the sun is far enough away to keep its most intense rays for other places around the world, but others highlight summer and autumn as the times of year to visit Salvador and its neighbors. There's really no telling when the skies and the earth will be good to you on your journey, though it has been said that color comes when the sun rises. (Translation: The longer the day, the more that South America's natural attractions come alive.)

Getting there and around:

Salvador may not be far from the national capital, Brasilia, however it holds an international flight center capable of just as many connections as its more traveled sibling. Unfortunately, or fortunately, however one sees it, Salvador doesn't serve as great a variety of carriers nor travelers. If you're flying from a distant overseas location, chances are you'll need a connection to Brasilia. Laid out in a modern, industrial format, Salvador is ripe for a good public transportation system, of which it comes away a winner. Much like the technologically advanced metropolises of the northern hemisphere, the city by the sea brings itself together via a great array of bus routes, taxis, and metro.

Attractions:

The great mansions of Salvador's suburbs are great for sightseeing tours organized outside of the inner city, but if you're looking for more substance and don't mind a bit of grit to satisfy your culture and history cravings try out the Afro Brazilian Museum. With many displays charting the slave trade, local rebellions, and the influence enslaved peoples and their familial generations to come, there's a lot to fascinate visitors. The Museum of Modern Art is also a site worth a few hours of your time.
