Salt Lake CityUtahs capital is one of the premier destinations for outdoor adventurers year-round in the US. Salt Lake City is where thousands go each year for access to top-notch skiing, mountain biking, and boating conditions. Nestled along the Great Salt Lake, the people of Salt Lake City are in tune with nature, but are highly industrious as well. The city may have been the settlement spot for migrating Mormons, but today it is an ethnically diverse community of businessmen, athletes, and academics. You can spend your whole stay walking among the halls of museums and looking out over the cityscape from the roofs of high-rises, or canoe til youre blue and try to spark a few flames with some stick and stones. Its all here in Salt Lake City, so book your flight today!
When to go:
Salt Lake Citys elevation inside Utah allows it mild summers and winters, and ideally pleasant springs and autumns. Temperatures rarely go above 90F, and humidity is almost never an issue. It is because of these conditions that hoards of mountain-bikers and skiers descend upon the city each year. But even if youre not an extreme sports aficionado, Salt Lake Citys climate leaves you beautiful days to spend strolling the streets and taking in a few coffees at outdoor cafes. Sunlight may be a bit too strong, however, so some shades and sunblock are good items to carry with you on extended outdoor adventures.
Getting there and around:
All international flights to the city arrive at Salt Lake City International Airport. It is definitely not among the most frequented in the nation, but the airport receives its fair share of European, Asian, and Australian flights each day. No matter where youre coming from, the terminals proximity to the city is a welcoming characteristic. At 10km (6mi), nearly any mode of transportation will suit you well, and of course, airport shuttles are the cheapest. Car rental agencies operate within the terminal, and if youre planning on trekking the mountains, we suggest getting your own ride.
People who plan on staying within the confines of downtown, or simply the urban Salt Lake City, prefer riding UTA buses. Tickets are cheap, and apart from rush hour, buses are not very crowded. Short bus trips within downtown are even free! You will find two aboveground light-rail lines, but their coverage areas are not large (they were built for suburban and student commuters).
Attractions:
Though you may be itching to get your feet on park grounds, we recommend a visit first to the State Capitol. The building is nearly a replica of the national Capitol in Washington, D.C., and youll find that the staff offers a complete tour of the building, only inside youll find historic memorabilia of the state of Utah, not of the union. The gardens around the Capitol are beautiful, and have some exquisite monuments in particular spaces.
Though non-Mormons cannot gain access to the architecturally stunning Temple in Temple Square, you can take a quick spin around the exterior and then scoot your way over to the Tabernacle, where musical performances are held during the year. The acoustics are so perfect that you can hear just about any movement from any locations inside (unless you know youre alone, we advice against conversations of a personal context).
Robert Redfords Sundance Resort is where thousands of athletically-inclined travelers go for a bit of everything; accommodations to anyones liking can be found here. If youre into watersport, however, youre better off visiting Utah Lake State Park, where you can enjoy the largest freshwater source in the state.
