Saint Johns

Saint John's

One of Canada's lesser-known gems, Saint John's is a city boasting a harbor that runs the gamut from providing docking for personal craft to operating piers for commercial and freight purposes. The Newfoundland region of the country has the privilege of holding Saint John's as one of its chief highlights, and though you won't find a whirlwind of cultural attractions on par with those of Toronto and Quebec City, there is no doubt among our staff that you too will fall in love with its roughnik looks, jaw-dropping scenery, and outdoor activities that can only be rivaled in eccentricity by the untamed lands of fellow north-Canadian locations. If one critiques the city solely on a climatic basis, Saint John's will fall far short of the standards as a vacationing mecca, but if you don't concern yourself with gray skies, cold nights, and heavy accumulation of both rain and snow, you'll find this city to be packed with the essentials necessary for a great time. Downtown Saint John's, situated upon hill overlooking the harbor, offers discerning palates excellent restaurants to choose from, and after you down your share of seafood you can always find a few shops (and galleries) that'll spark your interest. Is it safe to say that you'll be going home with souvenirs aplenty? All we know is Saint John's is the place for an all-inclusive Newfoundland experience.

When to go:

Founded on the eastern end of the Island of Newfoundland, Saint John's is perfect for those in search of a chilly abode for nearly three seasons out of the year. With similar weather patterns to cities in the northern US, Saint John's is home to daytime warmth in summer, as well as relatively decent temperatures in spring and autumn. Beware of the sunset! What may be a gorgeous view along the waterfront quickly turns into a race for the coats. No matter what season you choose for your trip dates, be sure to pack insulated attire.

Getting there and around:

With no shortage of connections to domestic locations, Saint John's Airport may appear to be fairly busy, but in terms of international flights, the terminal has a long way to go before catching Ottawa. US connections most likely dominate the international roster, with the UK to follow. Direct flights from London to Saint John's are available, but numerous choice are yet to exist. Simply put, take what you can get. If Saint John's were a bit more compact, walking would be the ideal mode of transport, but sadly, apart from traversing particular districts, you'll need a vehicle. Taxis are available, but unnecessarily expensive; buses are perfect for those who enjoy keeping with a schedule; car rentals are good for weeklong visits.

Attractions:

Just about all things Newfoundland can be viewed in the great halls and galleries of the New Brunswick Museum. A new establishment created in 1996, the Museum is a three-floor walk-through of settlement and expansion history. Everything from artifacts to artistic contraptions to self-categorizing items can be found in modern displays. A big draw of the museum is a Briklin, a remnant of a failed attempt at a New Brunswick automobile industry. Another Saint John's highlight is the Old City Market, where the hunger of the masses is abated each and every day. You'll find meats to fruits to baked goods for sale here. Come early if you don't want to miss out on the pie!
