Sacramento

Sacramento

It is difficult to put one's finger upon what exactly is Sacramento's most prominent feature. For decades it has risen up the ladder of cities in the US receiving the largest influxes of residents, year after year. In addition to the growth, Sacramento has long had a fruitful landscape where farmers are still able to cultivate and sell produce locally, circumstantially creating a closely-knit community in and around the fields. The inner city and suburbs of Sacramento are certainly not night and day in comparison, but differences can be seen with close inspection. The roadways are far more congested in central Sacramento, yet finding great cafes and shopping districts in the further reaches of town will prove to be unrewarding, to say the least. As a whole, Sacramento is scrumptiously beautiful. The valley on which the city sits makes you wonder why so many new and native to California opt for the coast instead of the woodlands. Many do enjoy the calm-inducing atmosphere of this city more than LA or any locales to the west of the San Andreas Fault, but with tourist numbers consistently down in this part of the state, it's a great place to see a different side of the Golden Country.

When to go:

With a relatively dry climate and summer heat spells brought to comfortable levels by the seemingly scheduled visitation of winds via the region's air stream. The most popular season in Sacramento is almost always that which comes before summer, however. Spring is when everything seems to go right in the area, be it the emergence of the irresistibly alluring collages of wildflower, the sunny skies - minus the burn, or even the numerous outdoor events that take place. Next best on our list is autumn, a period when a great deal of park-goers seem to whip out their paintbrushes and dabble away memories of the colorful scenery and leaf-covered pathways. If summer is the only gateway through which to enjoy the city, you'll get to enjoy all of its great attractions, though take us up on our recommendation and pack something with decent SPF.

Getting there and around:

Not extraordinarily far from the city, Sacramento International Airport is home to an increasing number of flights coming in and out of the state. Though most flights are in-state connections, it's easy to find your way anywhere around the country from the terminal here, as well as international destinations or origins that span the European and Asian continents. A bus, taxi, or rental car will get you into town, but with 2 million residents living within the limits of Sacramento, the roadway may not be too open. On average, taxi fare to/from the city will run you US$20. Controlling the flow of public transit, Sacramento Regional runs the city's bus and light-rail systems. Though the lines of the light-rail system are not extensive, they do serve daily commuters quite well, and if you happen to find yourself near a station and wish to get to one of the city's main districts quickly, board the next available train.

Attractions:

For years Apple Hill has been the nexus for dozens of family farms, and though you won't pay the low prices for fruits and veggies that you would at the eyesore-of-a-supermarket down the street, you will get to enjoy a few apples picked just a few miles away. A few farms of the Apple Hill Growers Association, in addition to their produce stalls, offer tours of orchards and vineyards, albeit sometimes at a fee. Though even some Californians are not aware that Sacramento is the capital of their sunny state, the fact rings evermore true with the beautiful Capitol building to show for it. Over a century old, the architecture of the goliath is nothing short of marvelous, and despite the fact that the interior is not as historically accurate as the exterior seems to hint, many still find it an appealing site to visit.
