Roanoke

One of the oldest settlements within the State of Virginia, an East Coast USA colony, Roanoke is a city with a modern layout that all but belies the history of the former trader's town. It's southern half bears a snake-like stream running through and around many of Roanoke's districts, and, fortunate for nature lovers, the metropolitan area boasts one of the largest numbers of city parks in any given grid-oriented location around the world. Throw in a few nicknames like 'Capital of the Blue Ridge' and 'Star City,' and you have a gorgeously simple, yet multifaceted network of museums, Starbucks satellites, whitewashed neighborhoods, and a brick-and-mortar infrastructure. Not too bad, eh? And that's just the start. Roanoke may be named after Native Americans' idea of a money pot, but the city is far from finding itself with the moniker like, say, 'Daddy Warbucks,' or some other preposterously glitzy label reserved only for the Fifth Aves and Vegas Strips of the globe. The city has a fantastically addictive region known as Market Square, where you can find a fresh supper (both made as well as the generic ingredients) along with a few cosmopolitan boutiques and those good ol' hot dog and sausage vendors, who always find someplace to strut their buns inside the most pedestrian-heavy quarters upon the most inhabitable continents. Sporting a rave-worthy zoo, a science museum with a whole host of hands-on exhibits, city-wide guided tours that rival those of the most popular destinations in America, and wonderful views inside and out, there's a lot to love and little to miss in Roanoke, Virginia.

When to go:

Home to both steamy and chilly weather throughout its year, Virginia is a state more or less placed on the eastern edge of the central row of American blocks (examples include: Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, etc.) which gather the mean average of all things climatic in North America. Summers, though occasionally showing lower-than-normal temperatures, offer beautiful, calm weather with great consistency. Spring and autumn typical duel it out each time around, with the first always coming out on top with the least amount of rainfall. Winters are always a last resort for tourists traveling to the area.

Getting there and around:

Roanoke Regional Airport, less than a 1-hour flight from the state capital, Richmond, is a sizeable collection of terminals serving roughly the entire county in which it resides. A few additional runways exist within a 50-mile radius, but most are only open to private, chartered flights. RRA, just 5 1/2 miles from the city's downtown area, is easy to get to and from. Car rental agencies are on-site, as are on-call limousine companies, taxis and buses. Roanoke's public transit department has made sure accessibility is evenly distributed throughout the metropolitan area. You can just as easily find a bus stop within the city's business district as you can in the suburbs close by. We suggest keeping with public transportation here for the sake of simplicity, the free route guides, and the budgetary benefits.

Attractions:

Market Square can - and often does - literally exist as the complete cultural ensemble of Roanoke. Consisting of shops, a theater, museums, culinary brilliance wrapped inside nicely-lit restaurants, street activity (musicians and the such), and a Civic Center, where everything from conventions to entertaining performances are held, the Market Square is where you'll likely be spending most of your time. Warning: Pace yourself or you may find those dollars to be draining faster than you thought.
