Rhodes

Among the most captivating of the Greek islands, Rhodes is also the countrys third-largest. Though it does not see the foot traffic like Crete brings, Rhodes economy is still reliant on its tourism sector. You can find everything from modern high-rises and lush landscapes around some of the best resorts in the Aegean Sea, to medieval and ancient towns and sites, where locals play the part of historic Grecians, complete with folk attire. Rhodes Town, the islands capital, is where many vacationers stay, though nearby-Lindos has been receiving more and more attention over the years. If youre up for it on a clear day climb Rhodess Mt Attaviros and get breathtaking views of the island and possibly even a few neighboring Dodecanese. Visit Rhodes; whether youre an avid historian or someone who just wants to kick back at an atypical vacationing locale, youre guaranteed an unforgettable experience.

When to go:

Rhodes touches both the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, and while this does not so much effect coastal conditions, temperatures and climatic changes can be somewhat peculiar. The weather in Rhodes is typically mild, but summers tend to be dry and winters are quite docile, with rains never causing major hindrances to schedules. The island sees and average of about 300 days of sunshine, something that gets two thumbs up from us! In all, this means Rhodes is available to the traveler throughout the entire year, and rarely do stores or services close-up until the next high-season. More time to plan your visit is always a good thing.

Getting there and around:

The only major airport serving the island is Rhodes-Diagoras Airport, and flights typically arrive/depart to/from fellow Grecian islands and mainland cities. International flights are not nearly as frequent (some from Europe and the UK) and many have to stop over in Athens or Rhodes neighbor Crete. The airport is a good 16 kilometers away from the Rhodes capital, so youre going to have to take a bus into the city. Fares are cheap, and they depart for Rhodes City every hour.

Buses and taxis are the most frequently utilized modes of transportation around the island. Car rentals are available, though travelers tend to leave the driving up to veterans of the roads here. Most taxis charge by meter, though you may find a driver whos only willing to negotiate a price before the trip (typically for distant destinations). Buses run an efficient, albeit somewhat slow service around the city. Roughly every hour the city runs 5 routes, leaving most of the citys streets touched in the process. If youre an individual of patience, this is the service for you.

Attractions:

Sometimes called Rhodes Town and City of Rhodes, the capital is a mix of medieval sites, art galleries, museums, nightclubs, and of course, beaches. The sands are usually crowded during the day, so youre better off strolling the citys historic boulevards and alleyways for a good time. Near Mandraki Harbour youll find hundreds of small streets where youll come across historic buildings full of everything from cafes to shops to hostels. The sounds and smells of the area are both intoxicating and pleasurable to those in the mood for some authentic city life.

You can then leave the Mandraki district for the hill where the Acropolis of Rhodes still stands. It was once a great complex of temples, sanctuaries and public halls, but though may of the buildings are left to been excavated, one of the highlights that has been fully restored is the Stadium.

For those interested in the ultimate vacation resort, look no further than Faliraki, where youll get beautiful, clean sandy beaches and the opportunity to take part in nearly every water sport imaginable.
