ProvidenceOriginally one of the most influential early cities in the United States, Providence, the beautiful colonial/modern capital of the American nugget known as Rhode Island, is seemingly one step away from claiming the title as the most picturesque star-bearing metropolis among the country's easternmost regions. Often placed well below the radar by those interested in the biggest and, not surprisingly, the most stuffy of locations (i.e., New York, Boston), Providence is best described as the back door to much of the good and little of the bad of northeastern USA. Few districts within the Providence are astonishing in the truest sense of the word, but there's more to the city than glitz and glamour. Walk its central avenues and you'll certainly see why many national publications are rightly boasting about its assets, in terms of its atmosphere, its foundational infrastructure, and its people. The small-town vibe is evident nearly everywhere you go, and the streets are as clean as any you'll see within coastal states or provinces throughout the continent. Take a stroll up College Hill, where you'll come to know a dozen highly-accredited colleges and universities, swarming with laptop-laden students and faculty, giving the impression that not only the two most popular cities on the United States' east coast are great centers where academia lives. Get a sense of Providence, and you'll be thankful that you opted for its calm, collected, and compact system of streets, alleys, and walkways over the busy, bustling networks of more traveled destinations. Also, with many places around the city highlighted by a delicate topping of foliage, there's simply too much to pass unexplored. Book your flight to Providence today, a decision bound to be reaped with awards.
When to go:
Much like its more globally recognized American sibling, Boston, Providence is swept with valley air throughout much of the year. Given the region's affinity for a good variety of climatic conditions, it's no surprise that many days of the year are reserved for downpours as well as sunshine. There's a lot to do in Providence, regardless of the weather, but fair predictions for the skies are always worth pursuing, as outdoor adventures within the bay, as well as inside the city itself, are much preferred to ruminations inside the walls of museums, cafes, and libraries.
Note: Providence is touched by exceptionally wonderful natural nuances in the latter months of spring.
Getting there and around:
Located within the suburbanite town of Warwick, a few miles south of Providence, T.F. Green Airport provides access to/from the city with connections stemming throughout most of the country, though it's entirely reasonable to expect a regional terminal to priorities with closer neighbors rather than those of distance states. Buses, taxis, and rental cars are all available for a traveler's choosing. Though it may sound appealing to take a private approach to transit around Providence, taxis must be called, and quickly lose their appeal once the commuter finds the city's bus system more efficient.
Attractions:
An annex of the Rhode Island School of Design, the city's Museum of Art is home to world famous pieces by departed international cultural celebrities such as Monet, Cezanne, Rodin, and Picasso. A wing reserved especially for American pieces is also housed in the structure - a worthwhile part of the Museum of Art for all culture aficionados.
