Preveza-Lefkas

Second to the north-westernmost province on mainland Greece, Epirus is part of the Ipiros region, a group of prefectural conglomerates, where both modern and ancient reside in seamless harmony. The capital of this piece of the country is known as Preveza, a small port town inhabited for over two millennia. Watched over by a Venetian Castle that is simply fodder for the eye, this city's slow advance towards modern Greece is much welcomed by travelers and tourists, who are finding it harder and harder to catch glimpses of worthwhile destinations with landscapes free of fast-paced development. Though the two are quite distant from one another, Preveza and Lefkas (also known as Lefkada), an island just outside of the Ionian gulf by which Epirus sits. With Lefkas taking the reigns on the majority of the region's tourism, Preveza is more or less ignored by the world body - a circumstance it finds to be a blessing rather than a burden. Both locations complement one another beautifully, and if you're tired of the endless stretches of sand or have held onto the stones of Preveza's castle long enough, a delightful switch between the two can be made in minutes. Take in the Epirusian capital's surroundings; wander the inner sanctuaries of Lefkas' lush, natural gardens. Make your time here you own and set yourself free among the past inside the present.

When to go:

There's no better time than early summer to visit Greece as a whole, and neither Preveza nor Lefkas is an exception to this generally well-known rule. In June, a mostly dry climate welcomes travelers to nation's western coast, and the beautiful conditions don't leave until well into autumn. The sun is a much-loved friend of the Greeks, providing all locations within the region with mellow temperatures, even in many extreme circumstances (hurricanes notwithstanding, of course). Preveza sees just as large an influx of travelers holing up in its vacant hotels in winter as in summer, and though this is assuredly an anomaly among the consensus, it's rather reasonable to suspect that the city holds many attributes of a winter vacation destination.

Getting there and around:

Preveza-Aktion Airport is, though not so much popular as necessary, a well equipped flight center capable of serving a much larger client base than it holds today. Taxis are the most used form of transportation between the airport and local cities and towns, and with prices being surprisingly cheap, you'd have to be on quite the tight budget to opt for a bus seat instead. Automobile rental services are located at the airport as well. If you're going to spend much of your time journeying from ruin to ruin, you'll have to arrange for a set of your own wheels if you wish to avoid monstrous taxi fares or wait a considerable portion of your day on buses.

Attractions:

Just 8km north of Preveza, the ancient site of Nikopolis is said to be the third to Lefkas and Preveza in terms of the region's most popular destinations, and for good reason. A city founded in the 1st Century B.C., Nikopolis was the home to many social hubs, including a theatre, an odeon, baths, and a stadium.
