Porto Santo

Located only a few dozen miles from the Madeira Island, the much more pequeno landmass known as Porto Santo resides draped in Atlantic goodness, guarded by a trifle of yet smaller oceanic protrusions. Just 14km by 5km, Porto Santo is a place ordinarily seen in its entirety, and here there are no holds barred, in effect leaving its coast as well as its interior for the enjoyment of visitors interested in the simple life and a natural habitat with a peak of roughly 1,600ft above sea level. Discovered years before the New World, Porto Santo, along with most part of what is known today as the Madeira Archipelago, is a place where growth exists is vast quantities. There's as much wilderness as tamed soil on the island, and with a beautiful climate come spectacular annual harvests. Grain, tomatoes, figs, melons, and other produce are all cultivated upon this Portuguese morsel, and though it is beside those of Porto Santo to boast of the results of their farming practices, there's no denying that the island puts out some of the best fruits and vegetables in the region - possibly in the nation itself. But don't keep only to the lines of sprouting seedlings. Take in the capital, titled synonymously with the island, where markets thrive on freshly picked edibles and intriguing stories; both of which, in some ways, are certainly marked for history books to come. Journey to Porto Santo's tallest rock, or bask in the ever-present sun heating up the white sands along the coast every day. See one of Portugal's choicest paradisiacal beauties for yourself. Book your flight to Porto Santo today!

When to go:

Typically the best time to visit any place above the Equator, summer is the Madeira group's best friend. Sure, August days can be marked by record temperatures, and it's certainly no walk in the park to trek the landscape as a great rainstorm makes its way over Porto Santo, but the island has had great luck in past years, and there's hardly a reason for Mother Nature to cease Her favoritism for the archipelago. As long as you stick to the warmer seasons of the year, and keep a barrier close at hand to avoid those unexpected soakings, you'll only need to worry about catching that flight whilst sitting in gridlocked traffic en route to your vacation in paradise. (Sure, we've referenced that term and a few derivatives already, but what is due to Porto Santo is due, no?)

Getting there and around:

Though Porto Santo's capital may not be the one to grant one convenient international access to its great variety of hotels, the island's airport is located only miles from the semi-sprawling grid of, well, Porto Santo. Officially planted within Campo de Cima, the airport sees a fleet of taxis arrive outside its gates at every flight's arrival. With little ground to cover between the terminal and major sites throughout Porto Santo, fares are kept reasonably low. You'll have a difficult time connecting directly to Porto Santo via most central and northern European flight centers. If such is the case for you, a flight first to Madeira Island will assuage your worry away.

Attractions:

The capital of Porto Santo may prove to be the ultimate attraction for you, placing all other sites upon the island into the 'excessive' category, but if you're interested in picturesque renditions and find colonial towns to be otherworldly magnificent, Vila Baleira will prove to be a prescription for glee. Whitewashed stucco is the general theme in this town, and with historical figures among the likes of Christopher Columbus making their presence known on its streets, there's much to be seen and learned.
