Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is a city once labeled Smoky City; it was the nucleus of industrial manufacturing and engineering for quite some time in the US during the 18-1900s. But the days of smog are long gone or mostly gone for that matter and first-time travelers to Pittsburgh will delight in its beauty, its bustling atmosphere, and its great location by the conjunction of two rivers (Allegheny and Monongahela), forming the great Ohio River. Take a ride up to the best view of the city atop Mount Washington, or spend a day wandering the exhibitions at the Carnegie museums. Youll find Pittsburgh to be a colorful town with steady modernization occurring all the time. Its so clean and friendly, that it has been repeatedly dubbed as one of the most livable cities in the US.

When to go:

The weather patterns in Pittsburgh are customary for its location. Along with much of the central-northeast, youll find the citys winters to be cold and snowy, its spring and autumn season to be sunny and warm, and its summer to see locals shedding as many layers as possible (in the realm of public decency, of course). Its never too dry in Pittsburgh, thanks to its peninsular setting, yet actual rainfall is quite low. Everything is much more beautiful in both spring and autumn; the citys flowers are in bloom, and in autumn, watch the hills come alive with yellows, reds, and greens.

Getting there and around:

The citys international flight center isnt exactly a stones throw away from downtown. Despite its great accommodations and playing host to a high number of international arrivals, Pittsburgh International Airport is about 22km (14mi) away from the city center. Therefore, good transportation services are a must, which PIT handles very well. Youll find Limousine, taxi, and car rental services at your request, or you can save some cash if you opt for the mass transit services (airport shuttles and Port Authority Transit buses).

Pittsburg packs a great number of attractions into the small area known as downtown. The buildings close proximity to each other allows you to walk most of the way, and if you want the city to handle getting you from A to B, use the free Metro services, known to all as the T. Buses run the majority of the streets, and to get to the great sights on Mt. Washington you can take the fun cable car ride to the top.

Attractions:

Ever since the city of Pittsburg left its massive industrial sector behind, museum, cultural, and performing arts centers have been sprouting up all over. However, one center stands above all, the Carnegie.

The Carnegie Center is complex of buildings. Under one roof you have the Museum of Art, Museum of Natural History, and Carnegie Library. These will take you at least a couple of hours to get through, and youll see everything from historic French and American paintings to recreations of dinosaurs. Separate from the trio are the Carnegie Science Center and the Andy Warhol Museum. The Science Center is complete with planetarium, submarine, and great hands-on exhibits. The Andy Warhol Museum is a seven floor shrine to the pop-art icon. Everything paintings, drawings, photography, videos, books and magazines are on display, and the settings behind his biggest pieces definitely do the work justice.

Pittsburgh is also home to a place known as the National Aviary, where more than 450 birds of at least 225 species are located, both in cages and in open, walk-through, faux-nature settings.
