PensacolaPensacola, a second-tier resort destination near the Alabama border, is a Floridian borough both like and unlike the state's other waterside sanctuaries. Hotels and golf courses are found in droves, but apart from a few museums aimed at particular interests, it can seem rather ordinary. Crowd volume is never an issue, as most families tend to favor Florida's more popular cities for...well...lots of things. Taking a closer look at Pensacola, however, is not a bad idea. What may seem like a wasted effort can bring you to the exact place you've always been look to visit for a family - or even personal - vacation. Pensacola touches greatly on its hand in Florida's past. With lots of history, lush greenery, ornate monuments, and public decorations under its belt, it's hard to resist the charm. Once you've opened a few doors, plans for a return will surely be underway.Take some moments to savor the calm waters and quiet beaches, take a ride to the city's trademark museum, and even catch a show by the famed Blue Angels, Pensacola's team of aeronautical acrobats. Over 400 years of colonial history is just waiting to be discovered. Don't let its modesty fool you. Book your flight to Pensacola today!
When to go:
Hot days dominate the summer season, making for ill-fated adventures with intense humidity and an infestation of gnats that offers more of an ample setting for an insect documentary than a family vacation. Fishing contests abound during this time of year, but if you're not one for hooks, lines, and sinkers, it's best to avoid the muggy season altogether and opt for the more pleasant alternatives of spring and autumn. Winter also reasonable conditions, though we don't advise oceanic wading. Boating conditions are rough but manageable.
Getting there and around:
Pensacola Airport (there are many flight bases in the area, we refer to the most commercial of them all) offers international access, but to a very miniscule degree. At times, it seems somewhat nonsensical to host any such services whatsoever. If you happen to be without a connection to Pensacola direct from the UK, you can fly to Miami or Orlando and connect via an adjoining flight, which will take roughly an hour's time. On arrival, buses, taxis, and rental cars are available: take a car for journeys through the wild; a bus is fitting for budget-minded travelers; taxis are preposterously expensive for the distance covered. Pensacola is fairly spread out, but if in-town activities are what will take up most of your time here, buses are the perfect means of travel. Taxis are available by phone call; luck must strike for on-the-fly curbside access.
Attractions:
The Pensacola Historical Museum is an incredibly rich course through the city's past that involves a good portion of aviation displays that can only be done by the city's National Museum of Naval Aviation. The Historical Museum runs its timeline all the way back to the earliest years of the Spanish colonies, while the Naval Aviation center provides unparalleled insight to the fundamentals of American flight. During the entire timeframe between March and November, Pensacola's Blue Angels provide visitors with live demonstrations. If you're visiting Pensacola in winter, you can catch them carving the sky in two IMAX films, shown multiple times a day.
