Palma MallorcaMallorca Islands only real city, Palma de Mallorca, is an upscale haven for the rich and famous where the night crowd buzzes with more intensity than the day crowd. With a lot to see and do, and a long history waiting to be shared, its no wonder why Palma is one of the most frequented destinations on the island. Its location by the Mediterranean Sea allows it the warm, tropical climate coastal Spanish cities are known to hold. The city is home to many attractions and quite a few architectural beauties, so why not book a flight today? Visit one of the best locales in the Balearic region. Visit Palma de Mallorca.
When to go:
Summer is the best time to visit Mallorca, but the trade-off for ideal weather is having crowded resorts, beaches, and restaurants all with prices skyrocketing. Your next best bet is to go with either spring or autumn. Theres a greater chance of rain, and the days may not be as warm, but youll beat the crowds, the price-hikes, and the general craziness that reigns during the summertime here. The only issue we have with visiting Mallorca at a time other than high-season is that many of the businesses around the city are closed during the off-season. This means that the thriving nightlife we mentioned earlier is almost nonexistent.
Getting there and around:
The main airport (the only international one, too) for the island is located at a convenient 8km (5mi) from Palma. Palma has received more and more traffic over the years; today, it receives many of its international arrivals direct from their origins. This, of course, means less hassle for you, and we give Son Sant Joan Airport great marks. A bus service connects travelers to the city, and from Palma you have a wide range of options whether youre interested in staying close to the city or exploring the nether-regions of Mallorca.
A rental-car is a great way of getting around quickly, though if youre not in a rush, we recommend a bicycle. Youll still get to most places, but at a much more enjoyable pace. The city has a number of establishments that rents vehicles and bicycles. Public transportation is done solely by bus, though two train lines are available.
Attractions:
The city of Palma de Mallorca is dominated by the great cathedral La Seo. This gothic masterpiece is one of the most splendid of the Balearic Islands. It is something of a castle with a sandstone-like structure, giving it that mystical fairy-tale presence. Even from afar you cant help but notice its grand size. In fact, today it is documented to be the second-largest cathedral in Spain! Construction of La Seo began in the 13^th century and was completed in the 17^th century.
The beaches at the coast of Palma de Mallorca are beautiful. The sea breezes and clean water make for perfect conditions for taking a dip. If youre not in the mood to go in the water, the city has an extensive waterside corniche. During the day the walking area can get a bit crowded, so if youd like some peace, quiet, and solitude, get there early in the morning.
The city is big on museums and galleries, even though one does not necessarily stand out from another. A few are: Fundacio Pilar I Joan Miro, Casal Solleric, Centre de Cultura Sa Nostra, and Fundacion Juan March.
