Palm Springs

One of California's premier resort towns in the south, Palm Springs is a vacationer's mecca in the center of desert. For the majority of the year Palm Springs receives the brunt of the western sun, and there is little difference between the main travel seasons of spring, summer, and autumn apart from summer seeing daily temperatures of over 100F, whilst the thermometer hovers in the 90s during the shoulder months. These scorchers do not deter vacationers however. Every year, thousands upon thousands flock to the luxury golf courses and country clubs of Palm Springs for the spas and buffets, and the occasional drop-in by a celebrity from the districts of Los Angeles (to the west) is not unheard of. Those burdened by a high caliber of fame tend to treat Palm Springs as the perfect domestic scene to lay back, enjoy some seclusion, and escape the frequency of earthquakes which plague the coastline's cities.

When to go:

It's no surprise to those native of Palm Springs to hear that their city averages 300+ dry days a year. As a result, heat is omnipresent, and the only place you'll find a hint of natural respite is in the hills of the state park nearby. Humidity is not an issue, so the activity required of you to obtain a tan will not result in extreme discomfort, but taking it easy is a good motto to abide by during your visit. Flying to Palm Springs in the spring will have you arriving during the peak flower season (before they all shrivel up with the forgetfulness of a single missed watering). Golf and tennis tournaments are numerous here at this time as well.

Getting there and around:

Palm Springs International Airport, possibly the second-most frequented terminal in southern California (speaking comparatively to LAX), is host to a large number of intercontinental flights, but travelers from Europe and elsewhere will have to stop over at New York or LA before arriving. Just 2 miles from downtown Palm Springs, any means of transportation from the airport will have you at your hotel in short time. A few of the areas within Palm Springs are suitable for walking, but the best way of getting around is by car. The city's roads are free from excessive traffic for the most part, but the key to enjoying the best of Joshua Tree National Park is to have your own automobile.

Attractions:

A two-mile visual treat is provided by the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, taking you through and above the Chino Canyon to a height of 8,516 feet in just 20 minutes. The ascent itself is said to be the steepest for a cable car in the US, and from the destination point, Mountain Station, you can view 75 miles (on a clear day) in all directions.Located near the Joshua Tree National Park, Palm Springs also sports convenient access to hundreds of trails upon thousands of acres with an overabundance of silence and nature-born critters - emblematic of the perfect zoo-like experience for some. It all adds up to make the park a popular site for everyone from hikers to archeologists. Keeping within such oppressive climatic conditions may make you weary over time, however, but chances are that your hotel will be home a pool or two; keeping your inner peace may be easier than anticipated. California is certainly home to dozens of cities offering fantastic experiences for vacationers, and Palm Springs is top-tier for those who like a bit of luxury to go along with their quest for par and their nature walks.
