Ontario Many may associate the name Ontario with the large Canadian expanse, but a trip east of Los Angeles between the dense and industrial centers of Upland and Chino will bring oneself to a little-publicized, but interesting city bearing a synonymous title. A San Bernardino resident, Ontario is a location with a popular just over 150,000 and a wealth of big items that make the city look both as if it is seeking a large portion of the state's tourist body, and, like any member of the Southern Californian landscape, a self-sufficient metropolitan area with a thriving economy, an interesting backbone of entertainment/sports venues, rough-and-tough neighborhoods, and a sizable portion of suburban sprawl. At first glance, Ontario seems nothing out of the ordinary: A congested downtown; streets lined with automobiles, buses, and bicycles; plenty of places to shop. With closer inspection, there's certainly more than meets the casually-attentive eye. A drive to Ontario Mills Mall will get you to floors of merchandise sold inside outlets representing everything from small boutiques to Wal-Mart-like establishments. And, though the city no longer holds it's own speedway, you'll find numerous sites throughout the region to satisfy your cravings for sport. Seemingly structured quite similarly to the desert-borne gambling mecca, Las Vegas (less the millions of neon lights), Ontario's division by dual multi-lane roadways appears to have served the city well. Though it is very possible to pass through Ontario en route to one's destination east or west of this transit hub, the sights one is able to capture whilst traversing Ontario's "strip" are enough to make many slow their speed. The only question is: Are you going to make your entrance via its central corridor, or the tarmac of its airport?
When to go:
Garnering many of the climatic benefits brought over from the sunny, breeze-swept locations of California's southern Pacific coastline, Ontario is similar to Los Angeles in that summers in the city are toasty and dry, but apart from their grid-shaped street patterns, you'll find the list of material possessions each shares to be short, to say the least. We consider spring to be the optimal period of the year for journey to Ontario. Temperate weather coupled with manageable traffic brings to mind the best chance for a successful vacation.
Getting there and around:
Ontario International Airport, the largest and most well-connected terminal in the county. Easy to get to, it would be one's best option if LAX were to be unavailable. Bus service is thorough within the metropolitan area, and if you find yourself without access to public transit for a long period of time, taxis are always on-call. Renting a vehicle may alleviate one's anxiety and transportation availability, but once you've realized you cannot take that four-wheeled nuisance everywhere you roam within Ontario, it'll end up a bane you'll be glad to rid yourself of when leaving the city.
Attractions:
Ontario Mills Mall. California Speedway. Graber Olive House. Vineyards. All of these are within a few miles' radius of central Ontario and offer year-round activities that provide fun and excitement for the whole family. (Minus So. Cal's Wine Country, of course.)
