Odessa Having become one of the most economically vibrant port cities in Ukraine, Odessa is a marvelous Eastern European metropolis with 'regional influence' written all over it. Bask in the innumerable possibilities set out by the city's cafes, lounge inside a nightclub where vintage themes rule everything but the sound waves, and journey out to some of the busiest docks to touch the Black Sea, and suffice it to say that you'll just be getting started. Visit a park; take in some of the most breathtaking classical architecture, or simply try to blend in with the populace and see what a commuter's day is like in Odessa. Open to countless possibilities, it's no wonder why Odessa is Ukraine's premier waterside locale - an assessment made by locals and foreigners alike. Adorned with a great number of monuments, landmarks, historical footnotes held inside some of Eastern Europe's biggest and best museums, Odessa is a playground for architecture buffs as well as those with moderate to very dedicated fascinations with notable events and cultural facts from past centuries. Luckily for modern art lovers, Odessa doesn't skimp out on contemporary pieces either. Whether you find B.C. Egypt or Picasso enlightening and gripping, this city has just about all bases covered - and well, we might add. Take it in portions; take it as a whole. Odessa is great place to visit for those intent on molding a unique vacation experience in a world full of pre-planned itineraries. Give it a day. Give it a week. When to go:
Never failing to show either its bright or its dark sides, Odessa is the home of an extensive supply of climatic surprises. Though notice always appears ahead of time when a downpour or cold or hot front seems imminent, the forecast is never signed and sealed. When things are uncertain, it's best to go to the safe route. If sunlight is the most important necessity for you during your travels, Odessa is best experienced in summer. Though rain showers are always a possibility, you'll have better luck gaining entry to a dry stint during the months of June through September than any other time of the year. Spring is the next best alternative to the high season.
Getting there and around:
Simply dubbed, Odessa Airport, the city's flight center is a no-tricks-and-no-tradeoffs establishment. Apart from the occasional delay (occasional turns to intermittent in summer and on chief national holidays), you'll get treated to the same scenario offered by any relatively major airport: long lines, crowded flights, and a confusing array of direct and stopover connections. Odessa's public transit sector has made great strides towards efficiency since its near total revamping more than half a century ago. The city's buses run on a very punctual timetable, and if you don't catch one at the right time, a taxi is almost always just a hand wave away.
Attractions:
If you don't know the name Potemkin, you will. If there's a singular focus this city has had since its rebuilding after WWII, it has been (and still is) always to remember the revered battleship and its crew. Sparking an uprising against the czarist government, the mutiny aboard the Potemkin in 1905 led to resounding change throughout Ukraine. Today, the crew is still honored in several events marked throughout the calendar year; Symphonic performances, gallery exhibits, and festivals are all organized and presented for those national heroes.
