Nagoya

Japan's capital city is usually the one to grab the attention of most travelers every year, but a few lesser known locations have grown in popularity as a result of peoples' desire to flee from the madness of Tokyo's lights and heavily congested streets. One of these 'out-of-the-way' tokens is the city of Nagoya. Not too big and not too small, Nagoya is on a level where restaurants and boutiques thrive and crowdedness is shunned. Sure, buses amble up the city's avenues and its downtown district is an executive's oasis, but Nagoya is far more down to earth than Tokyo or any other of its larger siblings. Residents here like to think of Nagoya as a miniature capital, where you can find everything and anything, and fortunately walk away pleased instead of run away put off. In Nagoya you'll have access to a great number of attractions, some of which bring Japanese citizens living throughout the region, and you can enjoy a night out on the town without shielding yourself from an intense neon glow or viewing electronic billboards every which way. Come to Nagoya for a calmer, more wholesome experience in Japan. Book your flight today!

When to go:

Nagoya can easily be enjoyed any time of year, but your chances of having a great time are much higher in autumn than any other season. The cold winter will only allow you experiences in museums and theatres; sightseeing adventures are certainly out of the question. Spring is much lovelier, but the humidity with which it associates is not a very pleasant characteristic. Summer is typically the typhoon season, which, well, doesn't exactly say, "Come. Enjoy!" In autumn, you can make a few whimsical trips into the suburbs, where a bike or car ride can have you in the midst of the best of Japan's forestry in its grandest of periods.

Getting there and around:

After recuperating from the effects of WWII, Nagoya billed its international air travel almost solely through Tokyo, but in recent years it has picked up its own tab and now many European, Asian, and North American flights are able to run straight to the city. At just a 30-minute bus ride, Nagoya Airport is not too far from the city, but if you'd like to shave a few seconds off an already lengthy travel time (including flight, etc), you can opt for a taxi, which, surprisingly, won't set you back much more than a bus ticket. Add to the fare the door-to-door service and the look of a bargain begins to surface. While traveling around the city it's best not to get too comfortable with taxis, however. Over time, the premiums add up; buses are just as widely available and no fare haggling must be done.

Attractions:

One of Nagoya's stars is the Atsuta Jingu Temple, a Shinto shrine that dates back to the third century. The shrine is outfitted completely with ancient masks, furniture, and early writings. Sacred items, including a sword and a collection of jewels, are said to be held here. Certainly one of the city's most architecturally fascinating sites, Nadya Park is a skyscraper whose almost-sole purpose is to provide visitors with one of the most intriguing shopping, dining, and entertainment experiences in the country. A great bookstore can be found on the 6th floor, but one must be quite good in understanding the Japanese language in order to appreciate its massive selection.
