Myrtle Beach

Most reserve trips to the United States' Atlantic coast for various stretches in Florida, but a contender seems to be gaining in recognition quite a bit. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina's charm by the ocean, is every point the typical tourist trap - countless shops, restaurants, boutiques, beachside vendors, etc - with none of the intensity and oppressive heat associated with Florida's waterside attractions. Spend your days with some clubs at one of Myrtle Beach's many golf resorts, or walk the massive Grand Strand, where nightlife is fun, enjoyable, and collected. Families are Myrtle Beach's target audience; therefore the only hoopla that can be said to exist here is that which is generated by various rollercoasters stationed along the coast. The only negative effect that can come from a visit here is loss of funds. Nearly everything is overpriced, and because people continue to stay, wine and dine here Myrtle Beach has emerged busier yet less accessible. Vacationers on tight budgets can make due at a few of the town's attractions, but if cutting corners is in the playbook, planning your trip is the best way to ensure a balanced and splendid time.

When to go:

South Carolina's coastline has the best of both worlds. Summers have all the sunshine with far less heat than the country's southern regions, and winters are chilly, but snowfall is scarce. You surely won't be taking a swim between December and February, but flannels and mittens are unnecessary. This climate makes for an ideal spring and autumn, both great seasons for those wanting time away from the crowds. A few spring-breakers descend upon the city each year, but not nearly enough to raise serious thoughts about whether to opt for another season altogether for a visit.

Getting there and around:

Myrtle Beach International Airport is not the most frequented of coastal terminals in the US, but overseas flights to/from European cities are numerous on a weekly - even daily - basis. You should have no trouble obtaining a ticket to Myrtle Beach from the UK, and if you happen to be making a stopover in either NY or FL, the airport is roughly equidistant between the two, so travel times are of no issue. Every imaginable transit service (except for subway lines) is available to take you to and fro various sites within and without Myrtle Beach. Buses are clean and run efficiently on their designated timetables; taxis are costly; and bicycle rentals are available at a whim. The last option mentioned is certainly the choicest, as it will offer you unrivaled freedom to roam the grid as you please without Greenpeace sniffing at your rear wheel.

Attractions:

Myrtle Beach is laid out along the Atlantic. Given that, why not add to the aquatics? In the form of Ripley's Aquarium, Myrtle Beach has single-handedly created what could possibly be the most popular tourist destination in central United States (to the...um...far right, of course). Millions and millions of dollars have gone into creating this sea-life masterpiece, and it serves its purpose. Whether you'd like a face-to-face chat with a toothy shark or are up to being mesmerized by thousands of tropical swimmers, it's safe to say you'll be spending quite a bit of a day's time here. Of course, more water-induced fun is on the agenda with the Myrtle Beach Waves Water Park, where you can 'chute' yourself down a few of the world's tallest slides, take a sight-seeing tour of the complex on the LayZee River, and get swashed around for a few hours by a ferocious wave pool.
