Mulhouse

Mulhouse

Held within the realm of the triangular network of the French cities of Colmar and Belfort along with the border city of Basel, is the industrial complex of Mulhouse, a former Swiss location--now a large group of warehouses, bleak city streets, and loads and loads of cigarette butts. Now, these characteristics are not at all scarce in this Western European nation, however, Mulhouse's affinity for the Gothic era, conspiracy theories, and attempts at livening its citizenry with the occasional festivity and/or museum exhibit, be it a highly-acclaimed art piece or a pre-historic preservation, tend to keep the city easily distinguishable from its neighbors and distant siblings. When entering Mulhouse, one is not greeted with the sight of soaring glass-and-steel creations. In fact, visitors' all-too-common first memory of the city is its traffic problem. Daily gridlock is the norm here, and though a remedy would not be too much to ask of the city's planners, France's increasing burdens in its employment sector and other economic woes have been deemed higher priorities. Until a fix arrives in Mulhouse, you'll simply have to hold tight to that pool of patience. Despite its lack of a good number of esteemed visuals, Mulhouse does indeed hold attractions of a visitor-friendly kind.

Recommended: Come to the city in August and enthrall yourself in excellent musicianship at its celebrated jazz festival, where revered performers from all over the world coalesce to bring the best of the globe's lounge and be-bop sounds.

When to go:

Technically located in the northern half of France, Mulhouse is the recipient of fairly decent weather year-round. Snow, rainfall, hail, and the occasional strong wind surge all make their presence known at some time or another in the city, therefore it is the traveler's desires which destine them for a particular range of the calendar's dates. Summers are mostly hospitable, though after downpours, humidity can be a strong factor that many won't be pleased to have to deal with, especially if one is vacationing. Mulhouse offers a fantastic climate in late spring, and its canal system tends to be used very often at this time of year, particularly after being avoided for much of December, January, and February.

Getting there and around:

Sharing a flight center with its relatively close neighbor, Basel, Mulhouse is an easy 1-to-2-hour trip from the national capital. The two neighbors' connection to one another affords them the fortunate declaration of both being well-known second-tier locations, though alone either is quite far from boasting traveler numbers similar to Lyon or Grenoble. Though some sights within the Mulhouse area are a considerable distance from its downtown and central hubs, you'll notice almost everything is generally accessible via public transit. Always allot extra time when traveling to an unwanted "rush."

Attractions:

Mulhouse is home to quite a bit in the way of cultural and historical centers, but there are five locations which have, over time, garnered most of the critical praise to come out of the city:The Musee de l'Impression sur Etoffes is a textiles-focused establishment with plenty of domestic and import materials to leave the most avid weavers in awe; The Musee Historique hardly in need of an introduction, is, well, one giant Mulhouse tribute within the walls of the Hotel de Ville; The Musee Francais du Chemin de Fer is a historical establishment for the region's rail industry; The Electropolis, a collection of machinery and documentation highlighting France's push for better energy; The Musee National de l'Automobile, a 600+ group of vehicles failed and successful.
