Menorca

Known both as Menorca or Minorca, this Balearic Island is a sanctuary of peaceful coves and beautiful views. Walk through the capital city of Mahon and youll calm, cool manner of the people, and the laid-back, whimsical attitude of the passersby and visiting beachgoers. From the islands principal beach of Calan Porter, to the rocky headlands overlooking the spectacularly clean water of the Mediterranean, youll be taken aback by the seamless connection of people, city, and atmosphere. Despite Minorcas decreased size in relation to its big-brother Majorca, the island is quite spread out, and youll feel far more sequestered on the many beaches than you would on the Majorcas crowded sands.

When to go:

Menorca is the perfect destination year-round, so itd be difficult to highlight certain periods better suited for travel than others. However, we do know that winter and summer bring larger crowds than the shoulder-seasons of spring and autumn. You wont find any noticeable climatic differences from season to season, but you may see a slight rise in the daily temperature during high-summer.

Getting there and around:

Menorca doesnt serve loads of flights every day, but its International Airport receives daily flights from mainland Spanish cities such as Barcelona, Palma de Majorca, and Madrid; occasional flights from Germany, Italy, and Britain arrive here, otherwise a stop-over in one of Spains largest cities will have to be made. The airport is just 3km from the Mahons center, and a bus ride is the best option. Wed suggest a taxi, but theres no reason for the price hike for such a short distance.

Getting around the island is a piece-of-cake, though it may be more difficult if youre relying on public transit or a taxi company. Bus service travels the whole island, but it may be hard to keep tabs on the schedule if youre trying to enjoy your vacation. Your best option is to rent a car before your arrival in Menorca. You can arrange to have the vehicle delivered to the airport or your hotel for a very reasonable cost.

Attractions:

Most visitors to Menorca come here for one universal reason, the beaches. All of the islands sandy spots are heavenly, some more crowded than others, some in total seclusion, and all have breathtaking views and backdrops. The lush, rolling forest provides you with crisp, clean air perfectly accentuated by the calm sea breezes.

However, if youre in the mood for some attractions away from the beaches, make your way from city/town to city/town, where youre bound to come across indoor and outdoor art exhibits. With a few museums dotting the landscape, the island does its job with covering history and archaeology, and with a topping of original paintings done by regional Mediterranean artists, Menorca is a cultural haven in and of itself. Many of the artists who have their works showcased in venues around the island reside here themselves, so to come across work of brilliance, and realize the likelihood that it was done by an little-known artist, becomes both a tragedy and a marvel.

Menorcas Catedral de Santa Maria, located in Mahon, is also a splendid attraction. Its interior and exterior architecture is enhanced greatly by its world class pipe organ. The pipe organ is the reason why organists around the world travel to Menorca for performances, both impromptu and arranged far in advance, every year.
