Medellin

Medellin

A city inside one of the northernmost provinces of South America, Medellin, the second-largest metropolis within the Colombian border, is the place where beautiful must come to sleep. Though the city boasts a population of nearly 3 million today, it hardly appears on the track to becoming the next Bogota. Once infested with crime, an all-encompassing drug trade, and massive poverty, Medellin has come out of a dark day to become one of South America's premier destinations, and though shaky happenings still go on within Medellin's outer districts, the city is far safer than it was a decade ago. Today, you can take in the beauty of Medellin without glancing over your shoulder every few seconds, and extraordinary, the city is. Pay a visit to a few orchid plantations here and you're guaranteed to come out a veteran critic of botanicals. Stand in the presence of what is possibly the most imposing structure in all of Medellin, Cathedral Metropolitana, and see if you dare take on the task of counting its bricks one by one. It's hard to tell one where to go in Medellin. Oftentimes, novices, even experienced Medellin travelers, find it easier to allow their whims to guide them through the metropolis. Who's to know if the city's crowded city center will appeal to a broad variety of foreigners? Some districts here are still saddeningly poverty stricken, but as locals like to put it: "You haven't seen Medellin until you've lived its best and its worst."

When to go:

One of few recipients in the world of a mixture of tropical and equatorial climates, Medellin is, like other locations within the region, a montage of delightful days accented wonderfully by superbly balanced seasonal changes rivaled in sustainability only by a few Caribbean locales up north. Thus, it is easy to see why Medellin attracts visitors throughout the year. Spring and autumn are very enticing, in that they boast many of the qualities of summer, but carry the advantage of being without record-breaking midday suns. The city shows to have an influx of travelers in winter, though the number is often much smaller than the year's most popular, as well as hottest, season.

Getting there and around:

Almost never referred by its official title, Medellin Airport is undoubtedly one of the busiest flight centers in all of northern SA. If you're looking to fly here from international locations, you may find your selection of connections to be quite sparse, but with the nation's capital only a few hundred miles away, you can adjoin connections to the two and have lost little time. As we stated earlier, Medellin is a busy center of a great array of industries, and hardly the most easily navigable city within Colombia. Relying on taxi drivers proves to be the most effective way of travel within the grid, and though buses are cheaper, you must compromise much in the way of crowdedness.

Attractions:

Medellin's Old Town is a great escape from the city's commercial and industrial hubs, but don't think the streets here are deserted. Outdoor attractions in this sector are many, and performers in just about every genre are out among the colonial landmarks both to please passersby and collect some coins for lunch. Probably the second-most popular sites here are the botanical gardens. Complete with a restaurant and amazing views of surrounding landscape, you'll be hard pressed to find a good reason not to pay a visit to these flowers.
