Madison

The capital of the state of Wisconsin, Madison is effectively the center of all things cheese in the US. With its population continuously growing as the years progress, there's no telling if the state's most notable industry will kowtow to another in the decades to come, but with the focus on processed dairy, there's hardly any escape from the bounties of Yellow American and the holed chunks of Swiss this northerly block has begotten its fame from. The city itself offers a variety of treats. From nearby slopes to expansive hiking parks to the beautiful campus of the University of Wisconsin, Madison is in the middle of a wealth of attractions just waiting to be discovered and experienced. Like many American cities, Madison is home to an increasing number of technology corporations and startups, and though the capital doesn't have a Microsoft or Google on its hands, you'll surely be glad to know its not stuck in the heydays of conservative economics - though you can still catch some downtown with parts of the New World before it was known as such inside the reserves of Native American land surrounding fairly large lakes a few miles outside of town. Tour the city's upscale Mansion Hill neighborhood and obtain views one rarely gets inside a large state capital. Rent a canoe for a day and peer into the depths of Lake Mendota and/or Lake Monona while waiting for those scaly creatures to bite. Pedal the trails of Madison's parks in summer; step into a pair of boots for a few powder-borne races with Wisconsinans in January. There's much to do in this city, and with just about anytime being a great time to make Madison your destination, there's little else to do but put those plans in action. Book your flight to Wisconsin's capital today.

When to go:

Madison is far from the waterside city of Green Bay, and its residents are considerably less fanatical about the state's professional football team - what with the faux cheddar hats and tight yellow pants - but they share many of the same climatic shifts throughout their years. Only a few hundred miles apart, both cities are given brisk, snow-filled winters and are fortunate to receive only a mild sun at the height of August. Both show similarities in humidity levels, though it is safe to say that the more northerly of the two is more prone to showers. Checking with Madison's weather conditions prior to traveling will afford you a decent advantage when setting up the itinerary for your stay.

Getting there and around:

Dane County Regional Airport serves the lower half of Wisconsin, and though international connections are all but non-existent, save for a few between nearby Canadian locations, you'll find it easy to get here once you've made your way across the Atlantic onto East Coast USA. Madison wouldn't rightfully own the title of capital if it couldn't boast a transit sector among the best of northern US cities. Travel by bus; travel by taxi; travel by rented automobile. All bode well for visitors, and walking a few districts is also a choice worth making.

Attractions:

Capitol Square is probably the best place to start off your Madisonian adventures. Acting as a hub for inner-city transit as well as the site of plenty of rest stops and cultural venues, Capitol Square is not to be missed. The most beautiful site within the grid, the University of Wisconsin, is a large campus comprised as much with concrete as greenery. Though most facilities are open to students and faculty only, there's plenty for the public to see.
