Luxor

Luxor is an incredible blend of the modern and the historic. You can find high-rises and internet cafes in the new city on one bank of the Nile, and ancient temples and tombs across the river. For any travelers, Luxor provides the essentials for an exciting and captivating experience, along with resort accommodations for those more interested in vacationing. Luxor is one of the busiest cities in Egypt, and youll find plenty of attractions here that you wont find anywhere else. Museums all over the world seek out pieces from ancient civilizations, and display monuments and other items from past nations that have inhabited Egypt. Visit Luxor and see the wonders of ancient Egypt firsthand. Its an unparalleled experience through a land of intrigue and wonder.

When to go:

Be sure not to book your flight during the summer. Youll experience intensely hot days of over 100F, and the nights arent that much different. In wintertime, the temperatures are much cooler, but rarely drop below 70F. In all, its either warm or hot, and Luxor gets an astonishingly small amount of rainfall no matter what time of year. This, of course, means minimal humidity, which is good for those especially-warm days. Travel during spring or autumn, and you wont bat an eye about the citys climate. Just remember: the better the weather, the larger the crowds.

Getting there and around:

Luxor Airport is a traveler-friendly 7km (4mi) away from the city. Youll be pleased with the service inside the terminal, and the speedy transportation of the buses and taxis outside. You may not be pleased, however, with the overabundance of Egyptian airlines, and the scarcity of international carriers. This is not to say there are none, but chances are youll have to make a stop-over in Cairo before you get to

Transportation services are abundance throughout the new city of Luxor, but are less so in the old half. You can rent a car or a bike to travel around if you have any worry of the possible lack of transportation. You can rest assured that Luxor sites are never barren of visitors, and taxi drivers are always looking to relieve travelers of the midday sun.

Attractions:

Many of Luxors attractions are across the river (speaking from the supposition that your hotel is in the new city), and there will be a noticeable shift in the way things are laid out and such. There is much less vehicle traffic here (most tourist opt for bicycle travel of the ancient sites), and the fast-paced atmosphere of the new city is lost here.

Visit the Valley of the Kings before you visit the Valley of the Queens. Not to say that the Valley of the Queens holds more important burial grounds (the Valley of the Kings is where King Tuts grave can be found), but the majority of graves found in the Valley of the Queens are more beautifully decorated, in our view. They are works of art in and of themselves.

The Temple of Karnak is a highly-frequented site in Luxor (Its geologically located in Karnak, the neighboring city of Luxor, but travelers to Luxor visit the temple just as well), and is enormous if one is scaling the Temple of Karnak with the Temple of Luxor. During the year, the city hosts a light show in the evenings at the temple to highlight its history. Travelers will be pleased to know that shows are done in a great number of languages, including: Arabic, English, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, and Russian. Inside the temple you will find statues, colonnades, a great obelisk, and even more-astonishing wall murals. Interestingly enough, the Temple of Karnak - along with the Temple of Luxor - is located on the new-city side of the river.
