Lexington

The focal point of the Bluegrass movement (though such a moniker would more appropriately have been given years ago) in the state of Kentucky, Lexington is a city/town with little glamour, but was designed with more soul than sauce in mind. The Kentucky lifestyle, centered around horse raising, sports, grits and alcohol, is one that is as unique as it is familiar for southern US citizens - perhaps this is why foreigners appear more baffled by societal norms in this region than any other in the nation. Lexington's tight center and laid-back suburban landscape have gone through something of a sibling rivalry since the city's inception, with neither coming out exceptionally more wealthy, advanced, or culturally sophisticated or diverse, all in all having - rather unknowingly - put on a humorous skit even its own populace has found amusing. Recommended for first time visitors, Lexington's endearing, cozy concert taverns and halls are filled with a year-round stockpile of acoustics, strings, snares and bells that even the hardiest of rock 'n' roll fans can't help but tap their shoes to. Having retained its greatly celebrated taste for a fine medley of alternative sounds, well-known voices, and special performances, Lexington surely has the "Ain't that America?" idea down pat.

When to go:

Though not an especially heated summertime destination, Lexington's eastern Kentuckian association gives it eligibility status as an occasional "we're cookin'" designee. Similar to most places around the globe, summer it's Lexington's time to shine, when its most active schedule comes to roost and, concurrently, it is host to the largest visiting body of the year. Lexington's Convention and Visitors Bureau is the best place to go for up-to-the-minute information about the city's tourism business.

Getting there and around:

Rarely is there anything quite like showing faithfulness to a way of life than naming one's regional airport after a traditional kind of melody. Blue Grass Airport, as it's officially known, is the gateway to the city, but it holds a roster hardly worth mentioning. Suffice it say you'll need a connection to New York before making your way here. Once you've arranged your sheets to your taste and are ready to catch a few whiffs of Kentucky air, you can head outdoors to wander its homely neighborhoods on foot. Personal vehicles have access all places around town, thus most residents own automobiles, and though traffic isn't entirely absent in Lexington, you'll have an easy time getting about, no matter what method of transit you happen to choose.

Attractions:

Calumet Farm, the raising grounds for a good number of champion horses, is a great place to spend one morning or afternoon. Though visitors are kept away from the prize-winning "fleet", the environment - save for the wafting, unpleasant stenches - is comforting and simplistic. Of course, if you're looking to view the stall where the ever famous Seabiscuit was groomed to perfection, a trip down Winchester Road to Clairborne Farm will get you there.
