Kavala

Like many Grecian attractions, Kavala, situated in the center of its northern arm, is a time capsule for Byzantine memories, an array of symbolic as well as simply architectural wonders (for their time) whose base is still utilized for much of the same purposes its founder literally set in stone thousands of years ago. Though highlights such as Thessaloniki, Corinth, Sparta, and Athens receive most of travelers' adoration amongst all destinations within the country's periphery, Kavala's status as an "unknown" has little effect on visitors' astonishment when presented with its bounteous cityscape. A castle tops Kavala's tallest point, making panoramic views to anyone at the site, unencumbered by any significant obstacles. Capture images of flowing hillside community and business districts, all seemingly naturally positioned around Kavala's sharply sculpted bay, an interesting contrast to the Aegean's rather lazy behavior. If the city's environment appears too crowded for your taste, nearby escapes are always available. A trip to Thassos and/or Philippi will bring you to sites not only far more "open," but of a heightened historical importance as well. Thassos, an island of beaches, trek-ready terrain, and irresistibly romantic village-towns, is a vacationer's delight, while Philippi boasts deep roots in the ancient Empire - it is the site of Brutus' defeat by Marc Anthony.

When to go:

An offshoot of the Mediterranean region, northeastern Greece is the host of an overall cooler climate than the nation's southern sectors, particularly Dodecanese islands such as Crete and Kassos. Summer, aided by Aegean breezes constant along the coast, proves to be the best season for travel to Kavala. You're guaranteed a wealth of sunshine, and any happenstance interruption in the way of rain is likely only to emerge as brief occurrences. Spring and autumn are less prone to lengthy dry spells, but the morning and evening freshness you'll experience in either is nothing if not invigorating.

Getting there and around:

The gateway for much of the air travel to come through the middle of the northern arm of Greece, Kavala International Airport is a complex capable of handling dozens of domestic and international flights. You may be able to squeeze a direct connection from the UK to the city, but if you're left without such a ticket to convenience, a stop either in Thessaloniki or Athens is second best on one's list of choices. Kavala's large grid takes true effort to navigate solely by memory on one's first visit, therefore its public transit system has placed bus stops in plain view to benefit the novice. There's little to worry about, even when out on the town in the late hours of the evening, but if security is a top priority for you when in a public setting, rarely ever is there a better option than traveling Kavala in groups.

Attractions:

Though its cityscape carries an unmistakable essence of Greek heritage, a few foreign powers have certainly made their presence known over the centuries in Kavala. Take the city's ancient water system for starters. The Turks were the creators of Kavala's vast aqueduct, an irrigation method still used today. Homer's not the only famous face to be made famous in Greece either. Kavala's castle, a beautifully set landmark atop the city's largest hill, is indeed of Byzantine roots.
