KarpathosKarpathos
Rhodes and Crete are both very well known Grecian islands, but there are many traveling within the region not aware of Karpathos, a stretch roughly equidistant between the most popular of the Dodecanese. An oasis with a history rooted deeply within vast empires which controlled much of the known world, Karpathos is the place to get away from the now semi-chintzy, watered-down experience offered by cities such as Iraklio and Trianta. Shortly after its official induction into the Byzantine Empire (after the Romans settled the land), Karpathos was nearly entirely swept by havoc brought pirates, which then led to invasions by Genoans, St. John's Knights, Venetians, and Turks. (In periods all their own, of course.) It is said that Karpathos was liberated in 1821 and claimed to be Turkish once more, only to be conquered by Italians in 1912. Greece took rule over the Mediterranean paradise in 1948, and has yet to be stripped of its power - which we don't think will be happening in the foreseeable future. As it stands today, Karpathos holds a past spanning more than 2,000 years, making boredom only a possible figment of one's imagination. While most visitors stay along its coastline, for the white beaches are often dubbed hypnotic, an expedition or two to its core areas is necessary for a genuine journey to the roots of early civilizations. Let us not spoil the secret any further. Open your eyes to the Minoan, Mycenaean, and Doric era, from which most of modern man have emerged. Book your flight to Karpathos today!
When to go:
Just about all within Greece's archipelagos are indubitably secured a calendar overwhelmingly comprised of sun and warmth, with 1/4th running with both a cooler and more damp day-to-day climate. Unless you're smack dab in the center of a jet stream you may wish to forgo summer (very hot) travel for a more temperate bout within the months of spring or autumn; coastal activity on the part of wave patterns is of a better blend as well during the off seasons as well.
Getting there and around:
Positioned in the south of Karpathos, the island's main airport is home to a semi-international schedule, with room made only for nations within the immediate vicinity (we're talking on a 1/8-of-the-globe scale). If you can't find a direct flight to Karpathos from the UK or any other northern European nation, an aeronautic rest on Crete, Rhodes, or in Athens will ease your...unrest.Pigadia, Karpathos' capital, is a conglomerate of all basic services you'll need for ventures on...hmm, shall we say "roads less traveled?" Rental car agencies inside the capital rather than within the airport terminal provide cheaper rates; opt for a bus to get you into town when you arrive.
Attractions:
If you're familiar with the region's historic customs pertaining to architecture, you'll notice many similarities between village homes on Karpathos and those within Greece, Turkey, and southern Italy. Of course, builders seem to have purposely downgraded their creations for pompously apportioned nest eggs would be logically inappropriate for many residing inside the island's small communities, but they in turn present a colloquial atmosphere that is quite inviting, as opposed to juggernaut-like palaces that serve no use other than a temporary ego boost.
