Karachi

The largest and, arguably, the most influential city in Pakistan, Karachi is a feast for the eyes, and ears. Its a typical busy commercial center, with a twist of heritage combined with great nightlife, relaxing beaches, and beautiful sunny days. You can spend your days on the bazaars of the city, or walking through the exhibits in the numerous historic sites and museums dotting Karachis streets. Youll find a great number of activities to take part in: deep-sea fishing, yachting (though this may be difficult if youre not a multi-millionaire), golfing, and horse-racing. Karachi was once the capital of Pakistan, but is still home to many of the businesses that determine the countrys economic success.

When to go:

Since Karachi is a port-city, youll find that it enjoys a sub-tropical climate, though with less of the rainfall that one would usually expect in such a location. Though in late-summer youll find the city drenched in monsoon-esque rains, youll be pleased to know that the remaining days of the year enjoy beautiful sunshine and calm, cool breezes. Youll love spring, with the temperatures just right. Autumn also enjoys much of the sun time spring does, but is known to be cooler. Of course, winter is the coldest of all, dropping to a crisp 75F. As long as you avoid late-summer, you should be basking in perfect weather your entire

Getting there and around:

Karachi Airportis not too far from the city centre, and youll be pleased with the speedy service of both airport personnel and the transportation services awaiting your arrival (wellnot exactly awaiting your arrival, but on occasion we enjoy pretending). Youll find both the taxis and buses great choices, and its all a matter of preference. If you like personal service to any destination of your choice, a taxi awaits you. If youre on your way to one of the staple hotels in the city, ride a bus.

Getting around Karachi is fun with a rickshaw, though you might find yourself with the desire to go a little bit faster. In that cast, go with a taxi. City buses are fine, but they can get crowded, and in traffic, such a large vehicle isnt exactly easily maneuverable. Taxi drivers tend to slip in and out of lanes slyly all in order to save you time.

Attractions:

Wazir Mansion is a fantastic place to visit if you enjoy seeing some great architecture. Standing as the birthplace of Quaid-e-Azam, Wazir Mansion has all the accoutrements reminiscent of the colonial era that makes up much of Karachis history. It is fittingly located in a residential area, and has appropriately been declared a protected national monument. Along with Quaid-e-Azams birthplace, the Quaid-e-Azam Mausoleum is also located in Karachi.

The Empress Market is a must-see, with an abundance of classic British architecture, commemorating the Queen Victorias Silver Jubilee. Youll find great Gothic styles, along with a famed clock tower in the center of the Market.

Karachis National Museum is another notable site worth a look. You can immerse yourself in a great number of artifacts from Pakistans ancient heritage, and see beautiful ethnological displays of the Indus Civilization. Gandhara sculptures and Islamic art pieces are prevalent here as well.
