Kahului

Nestled inside what could be the most beautiful landscape of all of Hawaii, Kahului is a town on the island of Maui that makes one feel great about getting in touch with the simpler side of life. Relax on the pure-white sands while sipping cocktails out of faux coconuts. Take a walk on the wild side and try to scope out a few exotic birds on a venture beyond the town limits. Get some pointers on fine restaurants and be amazed at some of the best appetizers and entrees of the Pacific. There's always something new and exciting on the island, though it has been inhabited for millennia, and locals aren't afraid to show how in touch they are with their ancient heritage. Being the travel hub of Maui, Kahului gets treated to the most visitors out of all haunts here, so festivities abound, and though some natives speak broken English or none at all, getting around town and beyond is quite easy. Surfing is a tradition that goes back in Kahului for generations, and resorts devoted solely to the sport are so close to the airport that you'll consider walking to your hotel! Get in touch with Kahului on your next vacation and see Pacific paradise that is Maui.

When to go:

More surfers and ordinary tourists and vacationers descend on Kahului in winter than any other season. The temperatures stay modern throughout the year here, but the water is crisp and refreshing and not a day goes by without a few perfect waves. Kahului sees a smaller influx of travelers in the summertime, but not to the extent that hotels are booked solid, and weaseling out a few discounts along the way is always a possibility. In spring and autumn your chance of an encounter with a fellow traveler will be slim, but these seasons do hold an advantage in that respect; interacting solely with locals can be a rewarding experience in and of itself. Consider all options before booking that flight!

Getting there and around:

The odds of obtaining a direct international flight to Kahului's airport are strongly against the average traveler (charters are a different story). Connections to/from neighboring islands in the region is easy, however, and there are numerous daily flights between Kahului and Honolulu. You won't find any surprises in Kahului's terminal, but excess services would only muddle Maui's simplistic image. Traveling the city is a straightforward task, but because of the lack of a tight-knit public transit system here, you'd probably be better off renting a car for however long your stay is. Only in the center of town do any traces of traffic exist, otherwise its easy riding for all vehicles. In winter, rates among all the island's agencies rise with visitor inflation, and those situated at the airport end up being far too overpriced. Browse a bit before picking up those keys!

Attractions:

Though Kahului is far from an extravagant vacation spot, it still runs its well-oiled tourism sector with a great variety of activities. Get caught up with the basics of windsurfing with tips and lessons from the pros and try out the waters for yourself. Take a boat ride out to the deep Pacific wilds to commiserate with whales as they make their migration journeys. Head out in the early mornings with your rod and reel for fishing expeditions that'll be fodder for the storybooks. Whether you're visiting on a whim, or coming to enjoy a pre-planned vacation package, your memories of Kahului will stay with you forever.
