Jersey

The hub of tourist activity among the Channel Islands, Jersey is at the top of the heap when it comes to visitor satisfaction. You can immerse yourself in the busy atmosphere of the capital and lounge out on the sands of an empty beach all in a day's time. The landscape of the island is spectacular, with rocky cliffs adding subtle touches to the shoreline and quaint villages that one just wishes he/she could call home. Restaurants here are arguably the best of the English Channel, and you'll have a hard time pulling yourself away from the markets without grabbing a bouquet of flowers for your significant other or some souvenirs to appease the desires of those back home. Jersey's capital doubles as a financial center, where it would be quite surprising to traverse the length of a city block without noticing a single passerby less a briefcase. On the other hand, openness is the motto of Jersey's northern region, well stocked with hiking and bicycling trails for the casual outdoorsman and avid sportsman. Being the most popular of the bunch, Jersey is also the priciest, so be sure to reserve your hotel room ahead of time to ensure the least cost for your accommodations. Visit Jersey if you're looking for a sub-tropic locale as your next destination.

When to go:

Though the Channel Islands are classified as sub-tropic, you might be surprised by the similarities in climate in Jersey to those of mainland England. Winters don't show to be freezing on the island, but nevertheless, a coat is surely a necessity. Summer, as a contrast, is warm, but not simmering. Seafood is in high volume in Jersey, but there's no need to down a cool pint with your meal (of course, if 'spicy' is your preferred food group, then one or two icy beers may do the trick). The most abundant attribute of summer is sunlight. One can go a week or longer without catching a drizzle, and nothing beats sun-drenched sands without the scalding effect known as the sunburn. Keep in mind that this utopian description comes at a cost: crowdedness.

Getting there and around:

A lack in travel to/from cities in the UK you will not find here in Jersey, but getting here from elsewhere will be tricky to say the least. European cities always keep a few available connections to Jersey, but travelers from Asia, North America and so on will have to making a brief stop at one of several mainland cities first. On arrival, you'll be pleased with the amenities the airport staff have decided to bestow upon jetlagged fliers; just don't order cocktails before heading over to the rental agencies on-site. After you've taken whatever means to get to your hotel, the best way of getting around town and, well, around the island itself, is by bus. Sure, a taxi does sound nice, and a private chauffer of sorts has a nice ring to it, but for far less cash you can get the same service to virtually anyplace less a knowledgeable veteran of the island to offer tips en route.

Attractions:

If this island is known for one thing around the world it is the Jersey Zoo. Founded not too long ago, the Jersey Zoo - more of a wildlife refuge than a place of caged animals on display - is home to hundreds of species, many endangered, and nearly all present here have the freedom to roam acres of natural habitat. The center's collection rotates on the basis that those that are endangered are determined capable of surviving in their native habitats.
