Jackson

The capital of Mississippi, Jackson (named after the 7th President of the United States) is history-laced nearly throughout, a place where most mansions are of early 1900s origin or before; where memorials and gardens are beautiful, yet unimposing, and the museums appear frozen in time. Not quite losing in the race toward advancement among southern US capitals but hardly stripped of its agedness and its gritty, weathered lacquer, Jackson is the place for those in search of soul with a side salad of y'all. It's got its colleges and it certainly isn't without a robust downtown sector, however, in the midst of the inevitably-spreading modernity is what has made Mississippi what it is/was for the few centuries it has claimed statehood. Jackson at its city limits is often thought of as eerily similar to the Jackson of old, where duels were nothing short of commonplace, Protestantism was seemingly the only glue and law book of society, and community was not an idea encompassing a single housing complex, but an entire district - quite possibly the city itself, for a period of time. What Jackson simply comes is a divided whole consisting of the past and the present, in which both coexist rather comfortably in a way that is all too uncommonly practiced in larger, internationally-renowned metropolises such as London, Tokyo and New York. If the ordinary isn't too off base in the world of vacation venues or locales ripe for "field trips," Jackson is sure to please. If, on the other hand, you'd like a limitless supply of the American du jour feet from a hallowed Civil War site, you're best off booking a flight to Atlanta, Charleston, or other more cosmopolitan complexes.

When to go:

Though megawatts enable the residents of Jackson and those situated in major cities positioned within the bottom 1/3rd of the nation a cool environment whilst sequestered within walls of some kind, the natural environment of the region tells a far different tale. It's difficult to make a solid distinction between the seasons of spring and autumn in southern Mississippi, except the fact that all things bloom in spring and autumn brings an ever-changing color palette for all to enjoy. Mississippian winters...well, they make up for droplets what they lack in frozen flakes. Southern summers: avoid.

Getting there and around:

Being a state capital, there's little unusual in seeing Jackson's airport providing regional access to surrounding cities and towns. What is unusual is its lack of a real international roster despite its boasting numerous such connections. The best (easiest and fastest) was of getting to Jackson from the UK is to stop in on Atlanta, after which a short 1- to 2-hour flight will get you to your final destination. Limousine and rental car services are both accessible inside Jackson International's terminal; outside, you can obtain far cheaper airport-to-city transit via bus or taxi. Jackson is home to a far-reaching busing system, making taxis more a distraction than anything else. Renting a vehicle is only advisable for visitors planning a true suburban/rural journey.

Attractions:

In their day standing as private constructions, the Manship House and the Governor's Mansion are wonderfully-kept Gothic Revival residences now stand as classified historic sites, the latter of which is still utilized by the state's head on occasion. The Manship House is open to public viewing everyday, apart from Mondays and Sundays. Other notable establishments are the Mississippi Museum of Art, the two (yes, two) Capitol buildings, the National Agricultural and Forestry/Agricultural Aviation Museum, and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
