IndianapolisNot only a haven for rabid sports fans, Indianapolis offers a historic cobblestone district, and a quaint village setting running alongside the canal that runs through a portion of the city. Indianapolis is the capital city of Indiana, and if youre an automotive nut, youll be pleased to know that Indianapolis hosts two major races each year: the Indianapolis 500, and the Brickyard 400. When traversing the streets, youll have access to world-class sports facilities, as well as world-class museums and arts centers. Indianapolis may not be the most-frequented tourist destination in the United States; however it packs its fair share of excitement and allure.
When to go:
The weather patterns throughout the year in Indianapolis are fairly consistent with places in similar locations within the hemisphere. In winter, temperatures rarely dip below freezing, and in high summer, thermometers have rarely been known to reach above 85F. Rain fall is less consistent in autumn, and the trees the dot the landscape and the streets are in full color both great bonuses for you. Travel during late spring or early autumn, and youll be enjoying perfect weather for strolls along the city streets.
Getting there and around:
Indianapolis International Airport receives most major airlines, and its terminals are state-of-the-art and designed to make your experience easier and more pleasurable. The airport is outfitted with everything you need, from sight-seeing information to car rental agencies. A downside for transportation is that Indianapolis International Airport does not provide public transit, so youll have to take either a taxi, or rent a car.
We recommend renting a car, since its the quickest way of getting around, and there are always parking spots available (It is not the busiest city in the US). If you choose to take a taxi from the airport, youre probably choosing to forego the car rental option, and travel via city buses and/or taxis. If youre planning to stay within the downtown area, you can rest assured that bus service is plentiful, though if youre planning on traveling throughout the greater Indianapolis region, your best bet is to take a cab, though be ready to pay a premium fare.
Attractions:
We suggest starting your exploration of the city at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians & Western Art. Here you will find quite an impressive building (architecturally speaking) with an even more impressive art collection inside. Among the numerous pieces by Native Americans and other western artists both famous and less known youll find some exquisite pieces by Frederic Remington and Georgia OKeeffe. The museum is also home to a great number of historic items, including: clothing, beadwork, and pottery (mostly of Native American descent).
Another must-see are the Indianapolis Zoo & Gardens. The Zoo & Gardens are located in the White River State Park, and receive more than 1 million visitors a year. Though the Zoo is home to a fantastic array of exotic animals, the White River Gardens really caught our eye. The Gardens are laid out over about 3.3acres, and are somewhat of a landmark of the city. Youll find over 1,000 plant species, and the Gardens keepers host wonderful special exhibits throughout the year any of which are sure to please the amateur botanist inside you.
A great place for the kids to do some exploration is at the Childrens Museum of Indianapolis. It is in fact the largest childrens museum in the world, and receives over 1,000,000 curious youngsters every year. The exhibits are placed over an expansive 400,000 square-feet, and range from the physical and natural sciences, to world cultures and the arts. In many of the 11 major galleries, a number of exhibits are hands-on as
