Guernsey

With one of the most picturesque landscapes of all the Channel Islands (English Channel), Guernsey sits as a destination for those with a wilder side, one that's not caught up in the milieu of restaurateurs and upper-class shopping malls. If you're one to enjoy the quiet rustle of trees at the shoreline where the contrast of wood and sand is nothing if not gorgeous. Guernsey has grown in popularity among European vacationers, but its neighbor Jersey is the real hotspot for tourist activity. You won't find many watersport rental centers here but you will find a clean, cool ocean and elegantly simple towns complemented by an easygoing atmosphere and uncrowded streets. Of course, that's not to say that Guernsey doesn't have a high season. Come to the island during summer and you'll have a hard time discerning the number of visitors in St Peter Port (Guernsey's capital) to that of any city on Jersey. Guernsey's attractions are not many, with most being historic in nature and the rest of the island's lure is left up to, well...nature. Of the two rivals, Guernsey is in a whole other class in terms of beauty, and it's difficult for us to comprehend why it remains as second best. Nevertheless, if you're rather close to mother earth Guernsey is the perfect spot for your next vacation, so pull out the credit card(s) and book your flight today!

When to go:

The English Channel isn't so much a haven for tropic resorts as it is a calm body of water suitable for the average traveler looking not only for a place to dip ones feet but to take on an adventurous persona as well. Guernsey delivers in that respect, and though you'll be avoiding the coast in winter at all costs the rest of the year is quite comfortable. The sun doesn't bake the ground to the point that you're tiptoeing up and down the avenues in the middle of the day, but it doesn't recede behind the clouds much, leaving the average upper-60F's feeling much warmer. Rainfall does come more often in the shoulder seasons, but you'll hardly notice the shift in frequency and if you'd like to enjoy your walks on the beaches alone for the most part, these are the ideal times of year to do so.

Getting there and around:

Despite Guernsey's diminished status in comparison to Jersey, its airport sees just as much traffic from a slightly different group of international cities (i.e., Paris, Amsterdam). Flights from London and elsewhere in England and the greater UK are so commonplace at both islands that they seem to outnumber those arriving from fellow Channel locations. Taxis and buses await travelers at the terminal doors, and car rental agencies are available. The best way of getting around Guernsey is by bicycle. The island itself only measures a quaint 5 miles in length, so not much of a sweat will be broken if you take to the pedals here. Buses are just as useful as taxis and are far less expensive to ride, so we say forget the personal service and go with mass transit.

Attractions:

Famous sites in Guernsey are usually found in the likes of old trees and ageing huts, but a stroll through the capital of St Peter Port will have you falling in love with the littlest of things. Many of its streets are cobblestone, offering a bit of a colonial vibe to your journeys, and you can find a whole spectrum of restaurants and shops. You can also find Victor Hugo's residence on the island if you're an admirer of his works and wish to forge a material connection with the novelist/poet.
