GreenvilleHaving followed the age old tradition of a city established from a central district, Greenville may not have the honor of being labeled South Carolina's capital, but it's impressively large layout and its integration of city and parkland surely have put it on the path to success. Located near Spartanburg in the northwest of the state, Greenville offers everything a city should, but has lots of what many don't. Sitting near the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the views from within and without Greenville are spectacular, though the peaks here are likely to be seen as foothills if measured up amongst the likes of Kilimanjaro and Everest. Still, the green range miles away makes for a pleasing backdrop for any morning or evening stroll (the effects dawn and dusk have to the landscape are picturesque) through the city. It may be odd to see that preservationists here are held to an equal esteem as would lawyers be in New York, but we suppose a bit of tree hugging never did any harm. Since nature and artists seem to go hand in hand in numerous circumstances, it's only normal that Greenville boast an arts sector worth a mention. Many organizations, including the Metropolitan Arts Council, Upstate Visual Arts, and the Peace Center for the Performing Arts, have ingrained themselves within society (Or is it the other way around?), producing a year-round bounty of goodness and entertainment - and occasionally a morsel of controversy. Begun as a trading post and later having lived nearly a century as one of the nation's premier textile centers, Greenville has certainly changed personalities over the decades, but it's character has remained the same. If leaf freaks are no pet peeve of yours, consider spending a few days in this South Carolinian wonder. Who knows? Maybe you'll be using both sides of the paper after your visit too.
When to go:
Seeing as the Blue Ridge Mountains are well within view inside Greenville, you can be fairly certain about encountering a relaxed, warm environment throughout much of the year, with cool gusts flowing through the clear-cut canyons of the city's districts, complementing an already wonderful atmospheric scenario. There's no need to worry about especially cold fronts moving through town, though quite a bit of rainfall is present throughout the calendar; an umbrella will suffice as a precautionary measure.
Getting there and around:
Dozens of miles from Greenville is the airport which will get travelers closest to this city. Centered roughly between Greenville and Spartanburg, the airport is busy, and connections throughout the east coast are present, though many become hesitant at the thought of hours of airport-to-city travel if heavy traffic were to be in the forecast. Hmm. How to ease those worries...how to ease those worries.... Got an iPod? You won't need much of a distraction while getting around Greenville, if that brings any consolation. The city's busing system is top-notch, proving even rental cars provide an inferior experience.
Attractions:
If you're one to have an affinity for certifications, Greenville's Beattie House will have you head-over-heels delighted. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, this beautiful, European-inspired (Italian) mansion is one of the city's more intricately "woven" sites. We say woven because, well, it is at present the site of Greenville's Woman's Club, and, well, we suppose the circumstances were ripe for a cheery quip. No? Alright, then.
