Greensboro

Between the Carolinian (North Carolinian to be precise) cities of Winston-Salem and Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh stands Greensboro, a relatively unknown member of this eastern US state, a city rich in history without much else to distract. Because it lives in something of an obscurity amongst its more famous friends, often sees itself as lucky to be lacking in a vast tourism industry - which, in effect, makes the city ripe for inspection by those looking for more authenticity within the American landscape. The people in Greensboro are pleasant, though it takes quite a bit of finagling to befriend a few individuals, as they tend to keep a closed community. To counteract this unwelcoming image, the advent of the more recent technological boom created an unfound openness throughout the state, throughout the region, throughout the world. Hey, Tim Berners-Lee said something good would come out of 24-hour hacking binges, PDAs, and fibre. (That is, optical fibre. North America has yet to enact a nutritional craze - in the good way.) Greensboro is the home of a factory turned museum, which, despite having been done before, is a great facility to visit for a comprehensive tour through the area's Civil Rights movements, and acres of a memorial known as the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, the site of an influential Revolutionary War battle between Cornwallis and General Nathaniel Greene. (The latter, of course, leading the colonial forces.) Many previously burgeoning establishments - industrial; commercial - have long been altered or have gone defunct, but Greensboro itself seems to carry on as it was in centuries past: a well cemented block amid an ever changing global environment. When to go:

Apart from winter, Greensboro is a wonderful destination any time of year. With plenty of nature to shelter locals (as well as yourself) from the occasionally burdening summer sun, there's little that can ruin one's stay. Checking ahead with weather authorities as far as forecasts are concerned is recommended, but even in a downpour, Greensboro isn't too bad.

Getting there and around:

Piedmont Triad International Airport is the final stop for travelers destined for Greensboro. Rarely the site of a busy atmosphere, the terminal is refreshing for those ordinarily disillusioned by grand-scale international venues. If you can obtain a ticket direct from Europe to the North Carolinian capital, book immediately. Otherwise, flyers from the UK and other distant places will find a stop over to New York much easier to deal with. Though bus service in Greensboro may not have a similarly sized fleet as that of Durham, the system is able to maintain frequency, the most crucial factor to the success of public transit. If you'd like to rely on more private means, the city is well apportioned with parking spaces for those intent on renting vehicles during their visits to foreign places.

Attractions:

Guilford Courthouse National Military Park is a large expanse of perfectly manicured land dotted with many mementos from the battle of March 15, 1781, which took place here. Watched over by a horseback-mounted General Greene, you can come to see its extra-large trinkets or even for a picnic.
