Grand Cayman Grand Cayman, the most frequently visited, and heavily populated of the Cayman Islands, is a wonderful place to go for a little R&R, or even an extensive period of time. Grand Cayman offers magical sights, a lush landscape, and great beaches. Theres no doubt that you will encounter other travelers along the way most flock to the shores since the tourism business hardly lets up. But enjoying Grand Cayman is all about interaction, with locals and with foreigners. Youre bound to have a great time at the nightclubs that dot the shorelines, and the resorts are always full of families enjoying the pools and the gardens that make up the appealing setting. Of course there are plenty of places to go for adventures and unexpected surprises, in the hills, cliffs, and
When to go:
Winter is high season for the tourism business, but you will never be the sole visitor here. Thats expected, and besides, its always more fun with a crowd. However, if youd like to ease up on the mayhem, visit during the summer. You wont get the most beautiful weather, but you may get a chance to enjoy some alone time with family and/or friends. The basic way to ensure yourself a pleasant stay is to check the weather reports to plan your days appropriately.
Getting there and around:
Owen Roberts Airport - the flight hub that serves Grand Cayman and the rest of the Cayman Islands for international flights (though the airport in Cayman Brac receives Cayman Airways flights) is conveniently located close to one of the busiest and well equipped places for traveler accommodations, George Town. At arrival youll have immediate access to taxis all ready to take you into town (at a fair price).
Getting around Grand Cayman is only possible by renting your own automobile. Public Minibus service is available, but if your desire is not only to explore George Town, but the whole island, then you must transport yourself. Car rentals are fairly cheap, and who knows, you might want to opt for a convertible to enjoy the Caribbean air while on the road.
Attractions:
While youre in George Town, why not do a little exploring? Standing as the technologically equipped hub of Grand Cayman, youll see beautiful modern buildings here, and dont be surprised if you feel as if youre in a sprawling urban area in North America. However, the advantage you get here are the picturesque seaside views. You can take a tour to the few historical sites around town: Fort George and the Cayman Islands National Museum, which doubles as the towns oldest building.
Grand Cayman holds the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park, where youll find yourself walking a mile-long trail that goes through a landscape home to over 300 native species. Youll see many iguanas and parrots here to liven things up a bit, though it may be a little tough to spot some of the iguanas in hiding. An extensive trail that leads through a bit of forest is accessible through the Botanic Park.
Theres also a place on Grand Cayman called Hell (dont worry, its somewhat of an inside joke). Here youll see amazing black rock formations and a post office with a clerk playing the part of the devil and making oddly demurring statements. Caymans Turtle Farm is nearby. Though the name sounds uplifting, the fate of the turtles raised here brings the mood down a bit again.
